Shouldn't it be possible to identify the process that's clocking-up the CPU usage? If so, you can simply keep an eye on the "CPU Time" column to see what the actual usage is. e.g., 10s of frobnicating the scroll bar costs 3s of CPU Time, or somesuch.

    Try a PDF..

Acrobat is the rottenest hog I've ever seen when it comes to graphics handling. It's amazingly poorly designed/programmed in that regard.

    Peace.

I'd agree, but would that be linked to Vista somehow causing overhead? Or just Adobe? ;) There will always be those apps that are simply coded badly, and as such will always cause issues regardless.

You're right vista probably wouldn't do a bit of difference in this particular case.

I just wanted to provide an example of a program that would grab more than 15% CPY when scrolling.. Don't kill me please

Agreed that Acrobat is a steaming pile. How well does FoxIt run in Vista with viewing of PDFs?

I'm wondering, do you people come across some anormal CPU usage with Aero basic or classic mode? there's no hardware GDI acceleration in Vista anymore, right?

You're correct on the hardware-accelerated GDI front, which is why many older apps will tend to use up more resources for the interim. However, GDI functions are so basic at this point that I'm still not sure if will really cause any obvious issues, even in "classic" mode. Back in Windows 3.1, GDI acceleration (if you had it) made a noticable difference in some apps and of course in benchmarks, but even on 386SX-class hardware it was still OK.

Back in those days, you could also install the Win"G" components for further graphics API functionality, but ultimately after the 486's got into the triple-digit speeds, you didn't really notice whether the card was "accelerated" or not (again, unless benchmarking)

I'm sure there's more overhead these days in regards to GDI rasterization, but I can't fathom it being more than maybe 10% in a worst-case on an older processor.

Tried it in GPU accelerated mode? It runs considerably faster when dealing with pdf's with large imagery.

I hit 70% on my AthlonXP 2400+ wiggling a window around (with contents shown while dragging, of course). I don't think there's anything wrong with Vista in particular.

Kept an eye on this thread to see what my results with Aero would be. Doing basic things, opening window, scrolling, etc.... never over 20%. Media player popped it up into the 70% range for a few seconds. Checks came from Task Manager. C2D E6400

I ran TAT just for kicks and hitting one core brought it up to 50% (alternate 50%/59% readings) and then hitting both cores the expected 100%.

The GPU accelerated mode bugs on my GF8 GTX in XP. I get a grey first page in every PDF when I have the feature on. Didn't notice any speed up either..

I get about 40 percent when doing the above but i'm running at 1920x1200 with a radeon 1900XT with cat 7.3 but interesting it's higher without Aero on.

Oh happy first post to me :p (long time lurker, figured may as well sign up now)

Not really interesting, without Aero, CPU does all the work IIRC
