Yes, those shadows are soft indeed - soft enough that the shadow of a box can be seen on top of the shadow of the solid wooden desk the box is laying on. (Example singled out from the beginning of the game, but it's a common artifact as TomW pointed out.) Numerous other cases where shadows were projected towards light sources have been reported, too.

Yeah yeah yeah, yadda yadda yadda, in the end i stopped playing D3 after the 6th Lab, which looked like the 5th Lab and the 4th Lab and the Alpha Lab and the Upper Level Lab and the Lift from the 2nd Floor of the Lab to the 3rd and the Introduction Level and the Instruction Manual. I am quite a patient guy afterall.
    But yeah, cool shadows.

Well, since that kinda was the topic of the discussion lately... an order of magnitude more so then where you stopped playing D3, at least.

Still, we're thankful for the invaluable input. :p

Can we agree on that HL2 is great game with crappy shadows, and that Doom3 is a crappy game with great shadows?:)

Personally, I think Doom 3 is a good game. It's not a great game, but definitely a good one.

And the problem with HL2's lighting isn't so much the shadows, but rather the fact that it isn't nearly as dynamic as Doom 3's. If you ask me, I feel that we're at a point now where hardware can do a good enough job at real-time lighting that games should strive for good real-time lighting before attempting to improve that effect with pre-calculated information.

Another big drawback of HL2's lighting system is that, unlike Doom 3, everything is not bump mapped. It has more of the piecemeal look that I've come to really dislike from older games.

Usually this is the point where the "it's bump mapped all right, it's just very subtle" arguments start to pour in...

Lately, there's only been one person who brings that up anymore. The rest of us don't care anymore and generally like how Half-Life 2 looks.

While I like the idea of going for realism instead of flashiness (e.g. I don't like FarCry's overly-shiny bump mapping), I've definitely seen some screenshots that could stand to use some bump mapping. After all, you don't need excessive specular lighting to make use of bump mapping.

    BUMP

From these 2 screens, we can predict that quake IV will surely make a better use of this Engine than who made Doom 3 did, because it's texturing and modeling are looking much better comparing both! I won't buy Doom 3 Expansion since it's rushed and I didn't like the graphics of the first one. But Quake IV i'll buy for sure...

Raven has some twists in store for the engine, that's for sure.

    Re: BUMP

Okay, why do you think it's rushed, even before it's released? And furthermore, you should care more about the gameplay of the game than the graphics. Personally, I enjoyed both with Doom 3. Not as much as some other games put out this year (particularly Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay), but it was still enjoyable.
