Quaz, I have a 1080p television with 1:1 pixel mapping running over HDMI. Is it possible to post a detailed "guide" on how you work out the native res for games? I have read the brief rundown in this thread but something in detail would be great. I'd like to help out if possible, since I buy a lot of games and may have some that don't have demos.

Quaz, It seems that AA turns off for the 360 during crash scenes. Might wanna add that to a list. I cant confirm it for the PS3 yet, its still downloading.

    i received Lair 1080p screenshot!
it's difficult to analyze, very blured , dark and messy and clearly not true 1080p, poor detail
i think it's 800x1080 rendering with 2x MSAA buffers (and blur) merge in one 1600x1080 framebuffer (same method than Harry potter and WWE 08 but with another native resolution) and hardware upscaled in 1920x1080

I just went through this thread... I found it a very interesting read and there were a lot of games that surprised me when I read what their native resolutions where... oblivion and COD 4 in particular...

Quaz51, I was curious if you've ever tested Splinter Cell Double agent or MotoGP 06 I've heard that the retail version of SCDA renders to 1080p and I've also heard that MotoGP has a native resolution higher than 720p and then downscales

both of these were from developers that grabbed dumps from the actual frame buffer in late builds just before the retail release.

Since so many people here have said that it was never officially announced that every xbox 360 game would be in high definition, i decided to do a little bit of research.

Listen what the guy says in this video at 4.42
    http://youtube.com/watch?v=spn3j7n7rOE

Here as well start watching at 4.20
    http://youtube.com/watch?v=_FJIJE95TRI&feature=related

This one right from the begginig
    http://youtube.com/watch?v=JtY7nRbasV0ng

They never mentioned the word native resolution but that doesn't mean anything i bet no one else was expecting anything else other than native resolution and upscaled 720p is not high def as well as upscaled dvd from 480p it's not as well so i think all xbox 360 owners have the right to feel cheated and ps3 owners even more.

The horse has been dead and beaten many times Hazuki. Just let it go please. This thread is much more valuable without examining PR. ;)

I think people need to take a step back. Lets be honest if say Halo3 was 720p instead of whatever it is, do you really think you could tell the differnece? Further COD4 is probably one of the best looking games on the 360 and PS3, yet is 600p. Really its insignificant in most cases and people are getting themselves in a fluster over nothing. I really love showing people my DVD collection upscaled using a (borrowed!) Denon A1XVA DVD player and watch their jaws hit the floor. Not really HD of course but you'd have great fun try to tell the differnence.

Of course i could tell the difference do you play games on pc? if you do im sure ull notice differences in resolution even if its only a "small" step up, halo 3's 737280 pixels fall kind of short compared 921600 to what "similar" hardware demanding games like gow and bioshock deliver, the proof that people can tell the difference is that we are having this discussion right now some might not even know what it is but they know image quality is not the same standards are a good thing and they should be respected specially when you promise it so much. If u see Cod 4 on a nice pc with the same settings (or very close to x360 settings) at 720p it will look alot better for sure.

Because AlStrong asked this is going to be my first i think and last post on this matter, here hope people just think about this and complain enough about it so microsoft sony or whatever don't promise things they cant deliver next generation. :)

Edit: I just reminded something does bleem for pc alter the psx games native resolution right?
I remember using it and i think it did.Anyone knows?

Bleem! certainly did let you modify the games native resolution, it also let you add AA and other Filtering effects if your computer could handle it IIRC.

I have a Bleem! disc somewhere and I fondly remember playing Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2 at 1024x768 through Bleem.

There was also Bleemcast boot discs that would allow you to play specific PSX titles on your Dreamcast. They officially released 3 discs: Tekken 3, Grand Turismo 2, and Metal Gear Solid. There's a group that hacked the Bleemcast discs and made custom ones for 40 some odd titles... I believe those games boasted 640x480 playback over VGA from the Dreamcast as well.

I really wish the official PS1 and 2 emulators for PS3 did up-rendering... it'd be worth buying a PS3 for that reason alone IMO.

Now that I think of it there has been debate over whether the Xbox 1 emulator on the 360 actually render the games at 720p or if it just does 480p and upscales.

I've heard that Halo 1 and Halo 2 are native 720p but all other games only render to whatever they did on the Xbox 1 and then get upscaled, but I've never seen any proof one way or another.

*** Sorry for the double post but I don't seem to have an edit option :???:

Thing is people are asking the question but not many know the answer and the only way to tell is to count pixel steps, showing that most gamers can't tell or indeed don't care. And as for looking a lot better at 720p, well thats your opinion, I reckon the vast majority of gamers wouldn't. Further you mention Bioshock and GOW, I have played both extensively and Halo3 to me looks better than both, massive open play areas multiple characters on screen (more then the 6-8 in GOW) and fantastic lighting. Really people are kicking UP a fuss over nothing and again I point out at 600p COD4 is one of best looking games on the 360 or PS3, compare it many 720p on the either console and it looks better.

Unfortunately all xbox games on the 360 are upscaled except the ones that were already 720p on the original xbox, i also had bleemcast for GT, was never able to find mgs i thought it would alter native resolution i wonder why xbox 360 and ps3 don't do the same, it would be really great x360 adds AA at least i think and then upscales its not too bad but like always theres nothing like native resolutions.
I played Tourist Trophy(ps2) on the ps3 the other day and it looks just the same as on the ps2, though its not unbearable is very bad very low resolution it seems less than 640 x 480 though probably it is not.

But 4x MSAA is applied in a lot of games. The KOTOR games were flickering messes on the original XBOX but looks decent on 360

    Cheers
