The best looking FPS this gen

Is still Killzone Shadow Fall? Seems like this gen is almost coming to an end with the imminent launch of 4-6tf consoles, I can't help but to feel slightly disappointed about the visual progression of the FPS genre. KZSF as a ps4 launch title delivered its graphics front immensely three years ago with a slew of cutting edge techniques such as PBR, volumetric lighting, volumetric shadow, Area lights, SSR, gpu particles, Bokeh DOF, high quality AA, POM, huge environment with dense geometry and high res textures a plenty all rendered at native 1080p 40+fps for the SP. There were a few good looking FPS that came along since then such as SW BattleFront, Doom and Far Cry Primal, tho none of them packed nearly as many fancy techs as KZ while not sacrificing a whole lot of other things such as scale, geometry density or lighting effects. The upcoming Battlefield might have a real shot at it but until we see actual gameplay it must not be included. Funny enough the only FPS I could think of that could go toe to toe with KZSF is our good old Crysis 3 PC, tho the lack of proper PBR does hurt it a bit.
So what do you think is the best looking FPS right now without taking framerate into account, just pure visual and tech display?

If just pure visual, it's battlefront. It looks really photo realistic.

If tech AND visual. I don't know :(

I really like Battlefront and DOOM. I think visually Battlefront has the edge, but I like that kind of colouration and stuff better, much more natural looking, and the foliage is great too, it is very photo-realistic :D

Other than that I also like Killzone: Shadowfall. I really love the way they use colour and shading in that game in general, and I like their art too. I hope if/when they return to the series they come back to more gritty Killzone 1/2 artstyle though :)

Maybe Doom?

KS:SF was one of my biggest visual disappointments of the gen. Coming off what Guerrilla did on PS3, to me it was not impressive mostly. Looking like any standard PC FPS of the last few years really upon release.

I guess the larger issue is diminishing returns really did finally prove it's existence this gen :( Nothing this gen wowed like gears 2006 or KZ2, and not even close. It's a bit sad for me, really. Quantum Break is another of this gen's best looking titles but again, it doesn't wow me that much when playing.

Pelupa, Battlefront is TPS no?

The most consistent is Battlefront. But the forest level of KZ still impresses me.

Doom is kind of underwhelming compared to those 2 games but I haven't seen much of it I admit. Isn't Advanced warfare more impressive than Doom?

I guess being a more static and small scale type of game such as BattleFront does lend itself to gain some advantages, the photogrammetry technique probably contributed a lot to portray how authentic the environment can look to the originals. Which in turn has become its biggest drawback since the creative freedom is limited by the real reference material. To me the game only looks good in Endor and to some extent Tatooine, not to mention the interior is pretty lacking compared to outdoor scenes. KZSF to me has tons more variety in its environment and the visuals are consistently high quality both indoor and outdoor. The lighting and shadowing are quite simply the best I've seen and the sheer geometry density in some big levels is breathtaking. I've yet to be wowed by any other FPS came since this part.

Battlefront is TPS and FPS, you can switch between the modes on the fly.

I actually really like that about it :)

There was a recent report claiming that EA dropped the single player campaign plans for Battlefront so they could match the film release hype period and holidays and that a sequel is being planned and in development with a proper single player campaign and whatever online multiplayer mode they do.

Killzone Shadow Fall is definitely interesting in that as a launch title it falls into not just launch but major first party PS4 game developed before the Seventh Core was unlocked for devs over two years later.

Hence after their current project...a future Killzone sequel would blow the doors off anything sans PS4K Neo stuff.

The problem with believing Doom is a serious contender is that even way back in Xbox 1 when it was exclusive (in consoles) it was considered the prettiest looking FPS on that platform which eventually runs out of meat compared to Halo 2 and Halo 1.

Doom 2016 is still a marvelous effort but despite fun...they gotta step up still...the game should have had at least a Martian farming greenhouse sector (these people weren't growing potatoes?) I know Doom 3 didn't take that aspect seriously by insisting in industrial, corporate and hell level variation...

Hell there should have been an ice stage (simulation of Earth environments on Mars for water production) even if the demons were freezing their asses off...the main nameless avatar blob is wearing a power space suit anyways.

I was gonna take a jab at the "easier to dev for" but E3 is next month...there may be new challengers to take that crown from KZSF.

Also given the recent events with Deadtide aka generic zombie cash in game getting an extreme remake-remastered treatment similar to Metro 2033 Redux plus more specifically on PS4 XboxOne...

Insomniac Games and Guerrilla Games should get into remake-remastered making of Resistance series single player campaigns and Killzone 1, 2, 3, PSP/Vita at 1080p 60fps...

And of course Id Soft should get on that RAGE remake-remastered or sequel.

In motion it's close. Like @function wrote 30fps vs 60fps is an important parameter to be considered IMO. We are comparing videogames which in the case of FPS are animated and interactive models of a game simulation. So the "in motion" parameter is (and should be) a really important one.

...
What jugnle level? the one with watefalls, river, and tall trees that you can climb? (the first level that gave yuo sniper rifle)

Yep, that one.

I'm voting for Half Life: Episode 3. In the ten years since it came out it's redefined what we should expect from Valve.:yep2:
I have a pretty good imagination, but it's hard to tell if the HL series is dead or alive at this stage.

probably they are busy with dead or alive extreme volleyball 3

wondering, learning, examining, how they can make a game with number "3" on it.

Other people have beat me to the obvious xtrem-volleyball comments. But I do think Alyx would be great at balancing on floats if she had the gravity gun. :yep2:

Who needs Alyx when you can have near nekkid Hitomi and Nyotengu? Kokoro? Brb.... ;)

That banana nearly looks real if not for the reflective shader at the top lol. But the rest is actually shockingly good looking. I say this as a particularly fancy banana connoiseur ^^
