[SW rendering] What's the most complex game/engine written for CPU rendering?

As the object say. What's the most complex game/demo/engine capable to compete with hw ones using CPU rendering? Has anyone continued this kind of developing?

I'd guess Outcast :)

Probably the Pixomatic renderer, which is still current and which you could use in UT2k4 as a fallback path. Quality/Performance was pretty good actually.
 
one of the first games not to have a software renderer was quake3 1999 so your best bet would to look around that time
