Multidimensional memories: layering information in quartz
.
Data written to a glass “memory crystal” could remain intact for a million years, according to scientists from the UK and the Netherlands who have demonstrated the technology for the first time. The data-storage technique uses a laser to alter the optical properties of fused quartz at the nanoscale. The researchers say it has the potential to store a staggering 360 terabytes of data (equivalent to 75,000 DVDs) on a standard-sized disc.
They're pretty sure they can the reading technology to affordable levels; not as sure about the writing technology. Bad-ass either way...

I'm going to guess 360 terabytes of porn. :p

Well DUH! :D

Then the wife finds it... "How could one person need THAT much porn?!?" Pfft, it's just one crystal, geez... Don't act like you didn't peruse the goods before chastising me, woman!

Cause it's Mega-Ultra HD holographic porn with a quadrillion channel uncompressed sound duh....

Anywho sounds awesome but probably one of those things that may never be developed beyond a proof of concept or if it is it will be 20,30,50 years before it is so.

I read about this last weekend, very cool stuff. You could wear a ring containing all of civilization in the stone basically, and then of course when you actually need it, no way to get the information out.

I knew it... the next step of the "plot" is the unveiling of "alien technology"... by reptilians naturally

But can you contain all of civilization, including the ring?

I remember the time when I collected those floppies (for backups *couch* ) and I marvelled how all of it would fit on 1-2 cds. storage problem solved, right?
