Each day that goes by I think Scorpio will be great, because it is being created by the Surface team. And this is the new jewel of the crown. :embarrased::embarrased:kinda..well..the video describes it better.

Have too many issues with my Surface to be similarly enthusiastic. :p

The base of that Surface Studio is definitely interesting:

    Dimensions: 250.00 mm x 220.00 mm x 32.2 mm (for reference Xbox One S is 295.00 mm x 230.00 mm x 64.00 mm)

    up to i7 processor
    up to gtx980m
    up to 32GB DDR4
    up to 2TB Hybrid Drive

    275 watt integrated power supply

And if I remember I think Panos Panay said it has great "acoustics"...aka quiet

So yeah this does bode well for Scorpio imo. Obviously gaming generates more heat than regular PC use but I'm excited to what they will do for Scorpio.

I think Shifty is just like that, he is critical by nature, never happy, always seeking perfection, the meaning of things, and the meaning of life. I think this is a good quote for him:

"I wish I could be dead for a day, just to hear what all the people would say...
To find out in the end, who is really my friend, and what the meaning of life is about..."

980M is a weird choice at this point in time.

Not perfect - just working, please. Latest gripes - 1) Camera app doesn't work. 2) Headset port stopped working. Had to disable on board speakers to route audio through headphones, and now the internal audio doesn't even show as an option in the drivers. 3) Windows Hello camera stopped working for a couple of weeks, but started again after maybe a patch fixed it. Also stupid things like not supporting native aspect resolutions in the Screen Resolution options.

At some point I'll factory reset and cross my fingers.

More relevant to Scorpio though, the build quality is good, there's no denying. There's a lot of hardware in this package. Perhaps if I could get a decent Android build running on this thing, it'd be awesome? :p

I figure they just want to be more like Apple. Including a gen-old GPU and charging 3-4k is just like Apple. :yep2:

That combined with a likely fire sale price for the 965m and 980m since they aren't terribly desirable with the advent of Pascal based mobile GPUs.

As well, these being targeted at the professional market means that a GPU with well tested drivers and application support could be considered a selling point.

IMO, it's never been in doubt that Microsoft could make a super powerful console that is smaller than the original XBO or even the new XBO-S while offering acoustics that aren't massively worse.

The biggest question has always been, how do you do it while remaining within reasonable price and power limits.

Disappointed at the pricing and specs for sure, although I love the vision and innovation of that Surface Dial. It makes so much sense now that I wonder why it wasn't thought of before.

Since it is Bluetooth, maybe they can expand it to other non-Surface PCs. I guess you lose some of the functionality due to non-touch screen PCs though.

The price is actually quite good when you compare it to its main competition, the Wacom Cintiq.

    Some choice quotes from Penny Arcade's Gabe (https://www.penny-arcade.com/news/post/2016/10/26/the-surface-studio }

And the price of the two?

    His overall impression and conclusion.

That's a big change compared to how disappointed he was in the Surface Pro 3 after how much he loved the Surface Pro 2. Microsoft was very serious about targeting digital artists with this machine as they had him in early in the development cycle for the machine to make sure they got it right from an artist's POV.

I really want to get one, but not being a digital artist, I can't really justify the price. But for digital artists, this is going to be an incredibly compelling device. It does play games reasonably well on the 965m of his test machine.

Also, note that if anyone reads the source post, I didn't quote it in chronological order. The quotes I grabbed were pasted in to fit the flow of this post. :) I really REALLY want one, but I'd be really naughty getting one. I wish I was a digital artist and thus could justify getting it.

Also on a side note. Now that I've experience what working on a really large monitor is like, I'd love to be able to get a 49" 3:2 ratio monitor to replace my 49" 16:9 monitor. One of the things he notices is also one of my niggles with a very large 16:9 monitor.

Back when I was limited to a 24" or even 30" monitor, 16:10 was really great as you could fit 2 standard sized document pages side by side for easy reading/editing. With a monitor as large as mine, there's no need to have it full screen. The screen could be put to much better use with more vertical space and less horizontal space when actually doing work.

And as I do all my gaming in a window, a 16:9 ratio offers no benefits to gaming as I can set the game window to any arbitrary size. And as I don't really watch media on my work machine, a 16:9 ratio again offers no benefits. I doubt any monitor maker will ever make a large 3:2 monitor, but I certainly wish one would. Maybe Microsoft will eventually release a 3:2 monitor.

    Regards,
    SB

    - Only the screen surely cost way over 1000$ ( it is not a shitty LCD TNT ).
    - The 980M, surely just because the developpement have start some times ago..

This Surface Dial look incredibly good.. If the quality is there and the software compability too ( i think to Photoshop, Krita, Autodesk softwares, Blender, Zbrush, Substance, Quixel etc ).

Honestly im surprised in good, at first, when i have heard they was prepare an all-in-one pc, i was like.. " hum"... But after seeing this. It is aimed effectively to graphist, to artist, to 3D designer..

For me the config will not be enough beefy, i need some compute power anyway, but i could still render in network with a beefy compute PC.

    Overpriced junk for power user.
Mobile parts are not as powerful as desktop parts, thermal throttling, no upgrades.

Should be just a monitor. But then monitor glossy surface is disgusting for any work except tablet mode.

I agree that this product would make more sense as a peripheral than a full computer.
I imagine it has no video input, which adds insult to injury in terms of value and longevity (not to mention the old GPU).

OTOH, with that huge resolution it would be difficult to assure a certain level of user experience if people were to use e.g. a 4GB Surface Pro 4 with it.

OTOH, to a graphics artist, it's is extremely cheap and affordable compared to the competition. With some features that aren't available on the competition. As well as being far more capable and offering a much large drawing area, mimicking more closely an actual physical canvas.

To the non-targeted audience (you), it's obviously not going to be worth it. Just like the Wacom Cintiq. To the non-targeted audience, hugely over priced. To the target audience it was the dream hardware peripheral.

Looks nice, though I too would like to see the separation of a monitor and the PC
A/ better design, easier to replace parts etc
B/ you have no option but to have the fans spinning ~60-80cm away from your ears
C/ wheel is lame, though I suppose you don't have to use it

Still the MS hardware refresh this time looks better than apples
