Does anyone know if using the "Backup files" option on Steam is like having the installation files of YOUR games handled to you? :smile2:

That might fix my biggest issue with Steam --too bad there aren't alternatives sometimes for the games I love on PC, except the wonderful GoG.

Not sure if I understand the question, but the Backup Files option backs up the game files so you can reinstall the game later without re-downloading it. I've also used it to copy a game from my PC to my brother's without having him download the whole thing again (did that with Torchlight 2). Of course he still had to buy the game on the Steam Store but once he did it was already installed.

I tried that and it works. It's not like GoG, unfortunately, but it is a step in the right direction.

Anyways, I got Elemental: Fallen Princess at Gamersgate.com and it only works with Steam -I got it working without Steam, though- so I had to activate my game code using Steam.

But making a backup of the game's files is fine with me. It's not presented in teh way I expected, though, 'cos it creates files with weird names, instead of providing you with an exe including all the installation files -like GoG-, so you need Steam every time to reinstall the game.

    Still.. it is an improvement.

Yes, you have to use Steam to play games that you purchase on Steam. They are pretty up front about that.

I know that. Still I managed to run the game (Elemental: Fallen Enchantress) just using the exe and without logging in into Steam.

I added this game to my GoG's wish list. I hope it makes the cut in the future because it is very original.

Wolf , a wolf sim (probably the best wolf simulator ever) made in 1994 by Sanctuary Woods. I played this game first in 2006 or so and I liked it so much. I love wolves /and nature/ and would love to have it at GoG.

Super unique and super original, nothing quite like it in the market. Games like this aren't made these days, it seems.

You have to survive as a wolf and you can be killed by humans.

    Here is a Youtube video:

As I said I've got Elemental: Fallen Enchantress as of recently. All fine and dandy. Thing is that I noticed that I didn't have any of my 13 Steam games that I purchased months ago or more than a year ago, can't remember exactly. I didn't care much about it and let it go 'cos I just wanted to play Elemental: Fallen Enchantress as of currently.

I haven't used Steam for a relatively long while -if less than a year can be considered a long time- and my Library of games was empty til I got Elemental.

In my collection of games there were great games like the entire classic Quake series, Age of Empires HD... etc.

But now I have zero games except for Elemental: Fallen Enchantress!

Does Steam delete your games' library because of inactivity? :???: If so, we are talking about serious business here.

Best bet is that you have 2 steam accounts and you logged into the wrong one.

That's the theory and the most likely reason. But I don't remember what's my old Steam account. Now that I know I can actually make a copy of my games I am more keen on the service -GoG is still my fav, always will, save a catastrophe- and now I found this... But I will try to make a false login so they send me an email to recover my password, thus I can know what's the email address I linked my account to.

I purchased both Stronghold HD and Stronghold Crusader HD at GoG as of recently --the games are on Steam too! and any tip applies to the Steam version as well.

These games are HD iterations with support for new resolutions and zoom in zoom out, of a game from 2001 (Stronghold HD) and Stronghold Crusader HD (2002).

    https://secure.gog.com/game/stronghold

    http://www.gog.com/game/stronghold_crusader

Something important about this game... If you use Windows 7 and Windows 8, you may need a DirectDraw wrapper. This one:

    http://bitpatch.com/ddwrapper.html

Then you just have to copy the files to the directory of the game. Then edit the wrapper config file setting the line 'ForceDirectDrawEmulation' to 1 afterwards.

Perhaps you might not need it though. :smile2:

DirectDraw was removed from Windows 8 altogether BUT in my case all I had to do was setting the compatibility settings to Windows XP SP3 and the game worked like a charm.

I used the wrapper at first with Stronghold Crusader HD, but I got both games and when I installed Stronghold HD I forgot to copy and paste the wrapper's files to the directory where I installed the game.

Thing is... I just set the compatibility settings and the game acted exactly as if it had the wrapper installed.

With Windows XP SP3 compatibility settings enabled the behaviour was exactly the same as with the DirectDraw wrapper. The screen blinks and flashes a couple of times and then the game begins normally.

It seems that compatibility mode enables DirectDraw like when it was used.

For those interested in any of those versions and how they do compare here it is a link:

    http://www.gog.com/forum/stronghold_series/never_played_a_stronghold_game_are_they_good

The game is pretty cool. Thousands of units on screen at times, 3D like terrain and engine, and the economy doesn't need lots of micromanagement, you just have to focus on defence, basically.

I prefer the original Stronghold HD (had I been forced to say one); it's cheaper, it has a better tutorial, imho, and great campaigns. But if you like the game both versions are totally recommendable.

In fact, I'd recommend both if you fancy the game.

King of Dragon Pass is a really unique game. HIghly recommended to anyone into old school PC strategy/RPG games. It's got the back end of an early Koei game with the front end of an interactive fiction title.

I also liked Heroes of Annihilated Empires from the list, it is a mix of Cossacks and Heroes of Might and Magic, according to the programmers, and it shows.

Heroes of Might and Magic games, Might and Magic series, plus Rayman games, Far Cry 1 and 2, The Settlers 1, 2, 3, 4 -plus a new one, doesn't seem to be as good as the others- AND The Settlers 2 10th Anniversary (with new enhanced 3D graphics, TS2 was originally 2D), Panzer General 1&2 etc, Beyond Good and Evil, Assassin's Creed 1 Director's Cut, Prince of Persia, Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell, 60% off this weekend at GoG!

It was only flash sale for that, though, the "normal sale price" is 8,99€
Fingers crossed for South Park flash sale (and one that would have bigger difference in the price than Batman had)
