Seriously, how is there not a thread for this already. :runaway:

Announced by Todd Howard towards the end of Bethesda's 2018 E3 Conference, the affable Mr Howard said" "We have also been working on... a brand new, next generation, single player game. But this one is in an all new epic franchise".

    That game is STARFIELD.

During an interview with Geoff Keighley on Youtube, Todd Howard said the game has been in production for a long time, and is in a playable state.

So what is it? The 'reveal' does not reveal anything about the game.

As for being in a playable state, plenty of games in a playable state never actually get released.

I think it's been in production for about as long as Star Citizen. Probably still 2 more years at least before release. Which one will release first? :p Probably Starfield.

Aren't assumptions being made here on what "next generation" means to Todd Howard?

Yeah, it could also mean Next Gen game engine. But considering it still isn't close to launch, it's probably a safe bet to mean next generation as in next round of consoles (which doesn't preclude a next gen engine either).

From the Eurogamer interview with Todd Howard about Starfield: asking about the game being "next generation"

Has there been any mention on what platforms Starfield will release? Or do we just assume that its next-gen only?

Possible non next gen version. It's not really clear.

Yup scalable engines have been a thing in the PC space for many years.

At least Starfield (and probably Cyberpunk) are targeting next gen. performance and scaling down.

This is the opposite of what almost everyone did in the last generation switch where games targeted PS3/X360 hardware and then scaled it up for PS4/XBO for games that launched on both generation platforms.

The next round of consoles from Sony and MS likely being very similar to PS4/XBO likely helps with this as well.
    • x86 -> x86 isn't as drastic a change as Cell/Power -> x86.
    • GPU architectures haven't advanced as dramatically between current gen and what will be available for next gen as it did between last gen and current gen.
    • Memory amounts aren't going to see a 16x increase as it did between last gen (512 MB) to current gen (8 GB). I think we can all agree that 128 GB consoles aren't going to happen. :D
    • Etc.
Additionally, if a console were to launch in ~2 years, 1080ti performance likely represents a reasonable target for next gen consoles. By then it'll be roughly mid-range performance and the current generation basically launched with mid-range AMD GPUs.

So it's relatively easy for developers to target next gen. console level graphics now because the hardware is basically already available. Arguably no next gen console from Sony or MS will exceed what is possible with current top of the line PC hardware other than tighter integration between the CPU and GPU.

    SB

Great thing with X86 consoles is that ports to PC get better too.
Btw, can we say that base PS4 was mid-range, when the HD7970 launched juli 2012 with 4.3TF?

It was roughly similar to AMD's midrange GPU of that generation the Radeon 7850 (1.75 TFlops).

Ok 7850 seems about right, 7870 2.5TF, 7970 being at 4.3. Quit impressive GPU.

Also something to think about if they have the game running. By not showing anything to the public then can easily scale the game assets and settings down for next gen consoles while targeting a spec that could be more powerful than next gen consoles.

If they showed anything running, they'd be kind of stuck with a potential PR disaster if the next gen consoles weren't as powerful as what they are targeting. And if they target too low, then they risk not being one of the standout titles for a next gen console launch.

The music score went from reminding me of 2001: A Space Odyssey to the original Gene Roddenberry Star Trek. The perfect combination... me like!

And now imagine 2001: A Space Odyssey being rendered with Gamebryo.

It shouldn't be to hard for them to estimate the hardware that's going to be used in next gen consoles. I'm sure they even have early dev kits.
