There's no need to get defensive. I'm liking the game, but the performance of the advanced rendering mode is not exactly something to write home about (judging from my experience and the hundred of threads on this topic all over the web).

I'm not interested in comparing feature checklists, that's never been a good base for an argument. Oh and please let me be the judge of how games perform on my system, you wouldn't know.

I'm going by what I see and experience, and what I see is 2004-area environments and character models in a neat looking and feature-rich, but sluggish 2006 3D engine. STALKER has features other games don't have and the other way around. Turn of the advanced lighting and shadowing effects though and you're left with a barely average looking game by today's standards. Which makes it all the more of a pitty that the DX9 features come at such a heavy price.

Nonetheless, I'm lookign forward to spend a few more hours in The Zone tonight. :)

Use one of the trainers available. Just google for it.

I hope they'll release the next patch soon.

That game was utterly awesome. I remember playing the demo over and over, enjoying every minute of it. Zooming in and listening to the static-y chatter from enemies (via the sound amplification you had) was just plain cool. Couldn't you also hear approaching vehicles if you zoomed in on them? It looked awesome (first game where I ever truly appreciated the amazing detail textures...) Controls felt smooth, the menu was clean, fast and very interesting (bio-...something, looked good).

Just an overall enjoyable game. I can't grasp why so many people hated it back in 'the day'.

The last area (Sarcophagus) is so unfairly, unbelievably hard. Primarily because I'm out of medipacks because the previous area was unfairly hard.

Humm Stalker has a great tactical component. It is necessary to preveer everything what we can need. It returns to the previous level and the level of the genius, and take some medipacks .I finished that part in veteran and without crosshair - but with many medipacks

Played Stalker for a couple hours today and did some early-game quests.

Can't say I like the game very much. I didn't expect it to be a missions-type game to begin with and maybe I just should have read more about it before I bought it but I really thought it would be one man against the environment type gameplay.

Sneaking around and killing and exploring a radioactive zone sort of. Oh well..

I probably wouldn't mind the missions if that aspect had been better designed. I went back to town to reap rewards and as I talk to one quest giver the message "Quest xyz failed" for no inexplicable reason.

Nowhere dd the quest say I only had X amount of time to finish it. That really ticked me off. Also many of the missions are very strangely described. One asks me to get a box found in the cellar of a building but the box is actually on the top floor and there's no cellar in ANY of the buildings. Crazy.

I'd absolutely prefer it if they overhauled the mission system to give more information about things like who gave me the quest and where he is and so on. It doesn't really help me when I get told to get back to the customer when I don't know who that is.

I also frequently get confused by the map/minimap. For some of the first quests I did there was this nice little arrow that pointed towards the next objective. Not sure if that's only for the first quests or if I somehow can get that help for every quest. Don't know how to get it back though..

The AI is also pretty weird. Sometimes enemies behave quite realistically jumping out of cover to shoot and then dashing away again etc and sometimes they just stand there doing nothing.

I actually prefer when they stand there  because my PC iis so slow in this game. I really wish it ran more smoothly.

I'm going to take a break from stalker until I get a new PC (this might take a while). It's no fun playing it now it just runs too slow.
    Peace.

I understand some of your complaints, but for others there's solutions.

If you don't know where to go next for a particular task, you can manually select which waypoint you want to go next by double clicking on it in the task list. Then the arrow on the minimap will guide you to that location.

The time limit can also be seen on the task list, for those missions where one applies. I also find that point very annoying BTW. Why do I have to come back and get my reward within the time limit, shouldn't it be enough to complet the task? I don't want to track back just so that I don't fail the mission all the time, especially since the enemies constantly respawn and I have to fight through the same barricades over and over again...

As for performance, I can sympathize. This shader MOD helped me tremendously though (over 100% framerate boost on my rig), maybe it can help you too...

    Wow! Really?

I was reading the manual to find stuff out but it wasn't very unformative. It didn't mention at all that I apparantly have to EAT too! ..Or how to do it  After having used both bandages and first aid kit by mistake I just dragged food over the picture of my guy. That worked..

Now.. Do I have to go to the bathroom too in a couple more hours? Heh heh. better start searching for some toilet paper then.

Thanks a lot. Your tips will help tremendously!

I only noticed that the bandits at the nearby tractor garage or whatever the hell it is respawned..and pretty quickly too. They killed off the good guys standing nearby but there was still a green blip on the map hehe.

Maybe I have to wait some more for other baddies to come back. I guess it's a waste of ammo to kill dogs too?

Me too! But the game is still too slow in dynamic lighting mode for my graphics card. I could run at lower res of course I guess but that tends to scrunch up windows on the desktop at the same time and I like my windows where they are.

Well..I waited for a year if not more before playing through Farcry because my then current rig was ALSO too slow. I can be patient heh heh.

    Peace.

There seems to be a consistent misuse of the concept of "cellar" in the game as every item I've seen described as being in the "cellar" has actually been in the "attic".

This game does take awhile to understand how the interfaces all work. It could have been more intuitive , still an excellent game imo.

Keep your eyes peeled for a new patch rumored to be released this weekend.

It got rejected by THQ and sent back to GSC for more work, so the long promised patch is still hanging in the wind. Probably a major bug was found.

I am curious why they rejected it , if it makes parts of the game better?

What I'm trying to say is why don't they release a patch today and another one next week?

Is it the paid man hours to THQ or bandwidth issues ?

Sierra put 8 patches on fear in roughly 1 year. What are the costs associated with patching ?

    pardon me for my naiveties....

According to the mods on the GSC website that talked to GSC directly and were expecting a release over the weekend, the patch got through THQ's Q&A and then got recalled at the last second.

The patch might cause a major bug like crashes or corrupting save games, and releasing it in it's current state would be worse, so I doubt it's a cost or time issue, but a genuine last minute problem that yanked the patch.

Having the assistant get killed and the game BSOD when I go to talk to Sakharov is kind of depressing. Hurry up, patch!

Yeah, some weird bugs in this game. I can't finish the game either due to a crash to desktop while loading the level after "Military warehouse". Drives me nuts!
But i heard that they fixed this bug in the next patch (wee!). The russian version is already released, so I guess it's just a matter of time.

Gonna be fun to play again after this long break.

Yeps, that's the patch I need, but a non-russian one.

    Hopefully they'll release it today.
