Sony's Gamers' Day 2006 (PS3 launch details etc.)

Titanio

Legend
No thread on this yet?

Sony is holding a press event in San Fran this afternoon, and we're just in the middle of SCEA's presentation. Kaz Hirai is promising answers to a lot of questions, apparently, including:

What's in the Box
Launch Titles
Peripherals
PlayStation Network
PlayStation Store
and how Sony will handle Downloadable Content

All of this is coming from a live feed at Luke Smith's blog:

http://www.1up.com/do/my1Up?publicUserId=5519593

Thusfar Hirai has confirmed 22 launch titles (Luke doesn't list them). More to follow, I guess..

edit - as rumoured before, the first 500k PS3 units will come bundled with Talladega Nights on Blu-ray, before it becomes available to the public on Dec 12.

SIXAXIS has a 20 meter wireless range, 30 hours of battery life for one charge

In the PS3 box you will get a AC cord, USB mini-cable, ethernet cable, Multi-AV cable with composite connectors. As we know, no power brick. And the BD movie mentioned above, of course.

Some pricing:

First party titles - $59.99
SIXAXIS - $49.99
PS2/PS1 Memory Card Adapter - $14.99
Blu-Ray remote - $24.99 (December)
HDMI cable - $49.99 (any standard cable will work, of course)

They're talking about the OS now..one neat point from Luke Smith's blog - when you go into your videos, they are represented by thumbnails playing back the video itself in realtime as you scroll through them, which is a pretty nice touch.

. Harrison is demonstrating the photo and musical capabilities of the PS3. In the videos area, all of the clips -- think YouTube -- are running in small thumbnail versions in real time, for Phil to pick which one he wants to see. He's picked a Spider-Man 3 trailer. Side note: This movie is going to be awesome. It's in 1080p according to Harrison (the trailer, relax).

Lol, they showed that cheeky 1 minute summary of the E3 conference on YouTube through the PS3 browser apparently!

Also, PS3 location free media streaming is confirmed - working locally at the moment, but will work over the web going forward!

Harrison then picked up a PSP and wirelessly ran the Casino Royale trailer on the handheld system. Streaming the media on PSP can now be done in your living room but Harrison said that it will soon be possible from any hotspot in the world. Streaming your PS3 content on the PSP anywhere certainly opens some amazing possibilities.

More detail - the PSP can pick up right were you left off on the PS3, as per that DLNA demo we read about some time ago. Very cool!

Harrison is demonstrating the online web browser that will be included in every system. They showed the YouTube clip of Kaz saying Ridge Racer. Sony has embraced the faux pas. Now, Harrison is using something called "Remote Play" which involves integrating the PSP with the PS3. The example Harrison used was firing up the PSP and picking up with the Casino Royale trailer, right where we left off.

The including Talledaga Nights thing, before the general public, is sort of a stroke of genius. The only thing is, that's not exactly a movie to showcase pristine picture qaulity, but of course I'm sure there options were limited.

Details on the store:

John then showed off the PlayStation Store. The interface included featured items, demos, downloadable games, top downloads, and what's new. The system has integrated X-Fire which allows current users on the PC to see who's online with PS3.

The store can be built directly into the games. This means that you can make purchases like episodic content within the game. The store has a top story that features the latest content. Downloadable games featured PS1 content that is playable on the PSP and in the future playable on the PS3.

(2:50pm PST) Blast Factor
The downloadable game Blast Factor was highlighted then selected and taken to the store. He proceeded to checkout where there was a wallet and a total. Gamers can either use a credit card or a PlayStation card that can be purchased at retail stores. Parents can set rating limits for downloads to censor material for their children and set allowances in the PS store.

The demo was performed live over the internet to the PS store. This was not a set demo, but actually connected to Sony's online service. The games will be around $14.99 and less. The store also included trailers and will eventually have full movies. The games that are downloaded can be played on up to 5 additional PS3s so you can share with your friends.

In the Downloadable games tab we have PSone: Jet Moto 2, Fl0w, Blast Factor, Got Sudoku, Grip Shift DLX and a couple other titles. These PSOne games will be playable on your PSP at launch, and Smedley indicated that further down the line they would be playable on the PS3.

You'll be able to share the same PSone download between PSP and PS3? You can share downloadable games between 5 PS3s for nothing extra?

Youtube. That satisfies a lot of people :).

I suppose that means the web browser working with flash then !

Hey Titanio I would like to know about the media functionality out of the box. What codecs will be supported? Can I stream from my PC?

I can only report what's reported, I'm not there! We know MPEG2 is supported via the watch impress article. Streaming, I don't know, but you could set something up pretty easily via the web browser if it is or isn't.

3:12 p.m.: Harrison says that's the whole PS3 experience. The games, the network functionality, the store, the downloadable games, the Web browser. He says Sony is proud to show it to everyone and asks people to enjoy the rest of the afternoon playing games, then hands it back to Kaz.

I hope Kaz will at least give a us a brief technical over-view with updated specifications for the console since so many are currently DELETED from all their websites.

The games that are downloaded can be played on up to 5 additional PS3s so you can share with your friends. ???

Can that be true?

Once you've bought you can download them on up to 5 other PS3s. Whether you have to be signed in on those machines to play or not, or whether you can leave them for your friends to play on their own logins, I don't know.

Real-time preview thumbnails for video is really, really nice as is the PSP remote play + location-free confirmation. Happy to hear that YouTube works on the browser too.

March is a such a long time away!

Definately, I think the PS3 --> PSP feature is one of my favorite features out of them all. :)
I could be at school (read: college wireless network) and watch or show a video to a friend thats on my ps3 at home. Bunch of possibilities there I think.

thumbnails video is a very nice touch.
and youtube/flash is very convienient as well.

I do wish we knew more about the eyetoy2 and the ps3 headset for further confirmation though.
