So is R580 supposed to be 48 pipes or 48 ALUs?

The green team has become rather chatty of late, just a pity it's not about their own products -- I suppose we should look out for G71 product briefings from ATI in the next few weeks.

There's also mention of an AGP GeForce 7 variant release on 2 February (US only, worldwide the following week), which I assume is the 7800GS. Is the hard launch going soft (c.f. 7300GS availability) or is this likely just a temporary... er, limp?

That's a good question. It seems odd that not only is it not available, but there are also no benchmark results available as near as I can tell. Perhaps nVidia feels that it's just not in their best interest to spend all of the time and effort involved in doing a hard launch except for high-end products.

    hehe.
I can't wait for the reviews.
And nvidia to counter it after saying they don't need to.
I think it's interesting the auther doesn't seem to realize that the X1900's pipelines aren't the same as nvidias pipelines (or even ati's own products bar the 1600).
If he's simply dumbing it down I'd rather him call it a 48 shader pipe card.

Vrzone forums have some benchmarks up. It performs pretty well in F.E.A.R.

I wonder why that game is so demanding anyway. Maybe the engine needs to be improved.

Just what OC margin can an already OC-ed G70 (512 GTX )have ?

And I bet R580 will have some OC headroom on it's part.

Go look at the overclock section of the Vrboards. That guy has screenshots of results running an X1900XT at 700/1600. He is getting like 20,000 in 3dmark03, 5300 in 3dmark06, and 61 and 75 FPS average in FEAR.

5300 in 06.......my single 7800GT nearly hits 5k when overclocked.......this R580 is appearing to be more of a "refresh" ala, x850 XT than a breakthrough in technology

of course, if they had held off on R520, it wouldn't have taken the thunder from the R580, but they couldn't get R580 working fast enough to release back then, so R520 was used as merely a stop gap to keep accountants and stockholders happy i think

hard to compare really when not sure other their system or yours, seeing as 3DM06 score relies even more on CPU (dual core specifically iirc)..

afaic, the R580 is as much a "refresh part" to the X850 as the nV 70 is to the GF3MX .. about the ONLY thing they share in common is that they (850/580) are made by ATI and that each are 16 so called "pipelines". The fact the 580 uses a smaller process, new mem bus technology, decoupled pixel shader are obvious that the 1900 is a far cry from mere "refresh part" ..

I saw . .what speeds can that hit? That page says 500Mhz.. that would be 1500 only and not the 1600 that we've all heard(wait .. 1600 for XTX).

Its hard to say about the 3dmark06 scores.

I dont think your GT can touch it in normal gaming. From what i am reading at various places it really performes well in a lot of areas.

    1.1ns ~ 900(1800)MHz

This sample used 1.2ns modules... strange

SLI 7800GT's hit about 6400 marks in an FX57 I tested last week non-overclocked.

So that would be 7000 with a dual core cpu (looking at the CPU scores, 06 looks like doubling the score for a single cpu, pretty unrealistic imho.)

What miserable benchmarks and in game FPS. Nvidia is going to be laughing to the bank with the G71. This is a sad time for image quality.

With all that talk about the 48 pixelshaderprocessors, I started to wonder if we'd ever see a X1900GTO with 1 defunct quad... so a 12-1-3-1 setup with 36 pixelshaderprocessors. I wonder how it would do against a X1800XT.

Maybe the card needs more bandwidth.
