So is R580 supposed to be 48 pipes or 48 ALUs?

ATI lists the X1900 as faster than the GTX-512 in AoE3.

And why is SS2, supposedly chock full of vertex shader instructions, showing the biggest gains?

Man, those ATI graphs are wacky. Assuming they're closer to the truth than Kris' #s, a G71 at 700MHz (be it 24 or 32 pipes) looks to dust R580. I mean, we're seeing R580 ~20% faster than GTX-512 on average, and a 700MHz GTX-512 is clocked 27% higher right off the bat. For this reason I'm beginning to doubt a 32-pipe, as it would just put an outlandish world of hurt on R580 in the current benchmarking suites.

While I have no idea about G71 frequencies, I'd be very surprised if it would have the same amount of quads as G70.

I was expecting =/>380M for this new batch of refreshes; R580 is within that estimate; remains to see if the other half will be anywhere near that ballpark too.

I wonder how well a G71 would fair with a 1.8GHz processor and the same bandwidth. It will only be better if they can feed it.

Reminds me of the same performance slides ATI released for R520. "Our card is 300% faster!".

    Yawn.

I hope i get my X1900XT on Tuesday so i can test it myself.

Depends if you're one of the "I want to see if ATi can pull off a hard launch" kind of guys.

yeah, it's amazing, everyone has the card, no one has the scores.

    ATi counter marketing move?

Just as good, Brent puts ATI on the record for 24th launch on the front page. I think pretty much everyone had that in their pocket anyway, but now its official.

Well the GTX 512MB was available for sale before launch right?
    Coincidence?

the only link I can see is that the 512 was nvidia's last hard launch and the 1900 is the first for ati.

but I wonder if it will be ati only or that other brands also have boards available. the chips should've been shipping for weeks so maybe ati wants to make it their own party? BBA's for sale for the first two weeks before the rest shows up?

True, but there'll always be a benchmark that at least "hints" at such a card's "untapped" power--say, 3DMark. :) R580's 1.5GHz RAM still leaves room for 7900, though. Isn't the GTX-512 RAM clocked at 1.8GHz?

Oops, I didn't think they had it at stock speed, but you were talking about the Opteron. Yeah, possible bottleneck even for a G71, but a higher res should take care of that.

X1800XL and very limited amounts of X1300s were vailable from day 1 announcment, so X1900XT would be the second

I'm pleased to see that ATI is indeed launching R580 based cards in late January. even if quantities are limited. rather than launching in the late spring. this bodes well for R600 launch in the fall, at least I would hope.

    Well, over at theinquirer http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=29152

"The top pic is a X1900XTX on an AMD X2 4800+, the bottom is a crossfire setup on an FX-57.
There are a few things to note, this card punts a GeForce 7800GTX/512 around by a rather large margin, 1000 points and outscores it's own sibling, the X1800 line by more than 1500. A single card, without tuning the heck out of the box, virus scanner running and all scores a hair under 11000.

The Crossfire rig is similarly 'stupid fast' running much closer to 14000 than 13000 with a similar setup."

The scores are 10939 Single card and 13696 CrossFire - you must point your mouse over the pic.

Yeah, but with 33 pages in this thread alone to search for - it's sometimes hard to know what is news if it isn't in the last three pages.
