whats the best freeware / webpage for this.
Got a new monitor today and watching a video the blacks were crushed, so need to fix but maintain a bright image. Windows has a built in calibrator but its crap. I kid you not ,they get you to look at a guys shirt and adjust it so you can see the crinkles on his shirt to see if its good :D. Dumbed down much, whats next panda bears?. Give me a checker CGI image or whatever.
So whats best?

Actually, the Windows built in calibrator is pretty decent, it seems to me you didn't actually run the whole thing.

Anyway,

Be aware that Firefox used to render this site incorrectly. I'm not sure if it's better now, but some other browser is safe.

Yes I ran the whole thing twice on win 8.1, perhaps you've used an older version. This one displayed a picture of a guy and you have to look at the wrinkles in his shirt, I kid you not. Whats next in 8.2 calibrate based on the pictures of the fluffy bunnies or smiling babies :)
Cheers that site looks a lot better, though with a 4k monitor the pictures are a bit small

That sounds like one of many steps that are in the Win 8.1 calibrator, yes I'm familiar with that...

The fact that you didn't mention what else the calibrator does indicated to me that you might not have used it properly.

Oh and by the way, once you've "calibrated" make sure to set the sharpening for your monitor according to the sharpness page. Then re-do calibration just to be sure.

Cheer mate, yes I've done the win 8.1 one at least 3x times now but are still not happy with the results.
I have grave concerns about the competence of that app anyways, heres an untouched screenshot, it looks like theyve saved the calibration image at jpeg 15 quality!
Seriously this is facepalm worthy

Im not happy with http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/ as well, with http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/gamma_calibration.php I only get the desired results if I lower my gamma to 0.5!
Im wondering perhaps my onboard intel 4600 is chocking at 4k, though I don't see why this would alter the colors. It chugs along @ 30hz, which I can live with. Also the monitor is 10bp though Since the onboard only outputs 8bp I assume this won't make a difference
I'll play a bit more

If you really want a reliable calibration of your screen this is unfortunately only possible with a sensor like a Spyder4 or so.
Doing it with an image reference with your eyes won't give you a correct result as our eyes will always see subjectively and relate it to the ambient light situation in your environment..
