It would have been pretty inconspicuous had he not drawn attention to it, though. There are those who go on to continue posting 10 chatty one-liners a day for weeks and months after registering. ‘Senseless’ as they may have been, the posts were on topic and not exactly lowering the level of the threads they were posted in. Not that such behavior should be encouraged, but if zoost is representative of the level of thread-crapping you’ll have to deal with from people wanting to lurk in RPSC, I say you have little to worry about.

I don't disagree with that (I just would have preferred he not point at it). For anti-sock puppet/insta-troll purposes the 10 days is probably a bigger deterrent. Like anything else, a determined abuser is going to do what it takes. . . it's always going to be cost/benefit.

Depends. The determined abuser is the one you probably don’t know is there, and - if they have more than half a brain - it’ll stay that way. The persistent ones on the other hand... In my experience, the common denominator for the latter group is that they’re pissed off at something or someone; for some topical, personal, or nonsensical reason. Luckily, the more persistent you are, the less clever you tend to be, so they’re most often easily spotted, but can be a real bitch to have to deal with.

IMO, ‘technical countermeasures’ are best applied to stop ‘crimes of opportunity’ (edit: and systematic abuse/bots/spam, but that’s another matter): The kind that will stop the everyman poster that, lacking any real nefarious intent, might be tempted to step over the bounds in the midst of an argument, but without being an annoyance to the same (and all other) user(s) at all other times. In that regard, I hope you have struck the right balance with the current system.

Rys has accused me of being a trouble maker, this right after the forum opened. Can you temp ban him from RSPC?
    Thanks.

The sock puppets we are after squishing (and so far have) in RPSC were mostly "crimes of opportunity". A member with a valid account would see a post that annoyed them (which of course is more likely to happen there than anywhere else on the site, for obvious reasons), and want to flame without consequence to their main account which was also posting in RPSC.

That's why the limit is only in that forum --that's where the problem was seen. Sock puppetry elsewhere on the site, when seen, is typically banned members trying to sneak back in.

Hmm. Haven't tried. He might thank me. "Gee, sorry, guys, I can't look that one over --geo banned me from RPSC." But then again, he might not. Tell you what, there's nothing stopping you from continuing your campaign to get Rys banned . . .I'll observe with interest, and root for a banning being the result, 'k?

Sock puppetry is a very interesting term.
So members with 2 accounts flame themselves openly?

Ventriloquist puppetry, while perhaps a more accurate description of the phenomenon, is too bloody hard to spell correctly...

Pardon me for not going into it much further, Kruno --I don't think I care to give you ideas.

No, I didn't. I asked you a simple question, to which you answered (almost) to my satisfaction. Thanks for posting at Beyond3D, which isn't to be confused with Beyond Kruno's House of Complete and Utter Random, And Sometimes 3D. 'k? k.

Oh, I like the Kukula, Fran, and Ollie of it all that "sock puppetry" gives a flavor of.

Most internet sock puppets are pretty damned bad "ventriloquism" anyway, which I think is also why it's had that name.

You always do use references I like Geo. Been a while since I thought of that show.

For the record, I'm a decent ventriloquist but a lousy sock puppet. ;)

I find it helpful to keep in mind that Kruno acutally means very little of what he says. ;)

Y'know, I think I had the right ventriloquist, but the wrong puppet. Lambchop! That's who I was thinking of.

Edit: Nah, wrong ventriloquist too --Shari Lewis does Lambchop. But Lambchop is still the closest, I think, to the traditional "sock puppet" that a pro ever used with good commercial success.

Bah... Leave it to newly deputized supermod geo to trump my single throwaway one-liner post of the month with something both reasoned and funny...

On the bright side, your choice of cultural reference just added 15-20 years to your actual age, so there!

This thread is a concentrate of all what make the internets so great (Or bad, depends on your POV, that is).
I'll let you find the different composants, for yourself.

Still a happy memory, but my daughter saw me hunt the picture up and asked me why the lamb was named Lambchop....

It's good to have the RPSC back, thanks again for everyone who put in the effort to make it work...I really thought it was going to be gone.
