It has been like this for years, right? products previewed, wait weeks, buy product.
I've got my x800xt-pe quite soon I guess, the end of july.
Sure, Ati neede to get the card in view quickly after the strong showing of the 6800Ultra, but the cards were not unavailable, just really hard to get..

Actually, it's a worrying trend that's been going on for the past two years (if memory serves me right). Plus, in my book, hard to get = unavailable. You either have enough stock to satisfy demand on launch (or a reasonable time after, say a month), or you hold the launch till you do.

For what it's worth, it seems that the stock analysts have had meetings with ATI management recently and some of the discussion is showing up in their investor briefings.

One which came out today from TD Waterhouse says that "ATI indicates it has three or four desktop discrete graphics chips in various stages of development using its next-generation architecture, which features Shader Model 3.0, and is manufactured using TSMC's 90 nm process technology. Management characterizes its 90nm transition as being quite strong, and that it is comfortable with the yields. We expect ATI’s upcoming high-end desktop discrete graphics chip, the R520, to launch in the June/July timeframe, and to contribute to revenue in Q4 (Aug), with shipments beginning with the channel (i.e., the white-box market)."

Nothing really new there, but it's something closer to confirmation of what people on this board have been saying. I do note that the timeframe given is based on the analyst's opinion, not necessarily from ATI management (although I assume it was influenced by their discussions).

To dream the impossible dream. . .*

*Includes fanciful connections to Consumer Electronics quality; previous speculation about K; missing transistors when math is done with 16p and 350M as a baseline; notes the use of "custom memory interface" in the patent; and unkind and no doubt unjust speculation about why our host was all over the other March 29 patent like white on rice but has said not a peep about this one. Side effects with less than 5% chance of occurrence include vomiting, hair loss, and nose warts. If erections persist for more than four hours, seek immediate medical assistance.

I'm suprised no one has posted this yet.

I guess that new type of anti-aliasing the R520 is called over-sampling anti-aliasing.I wonder if it comes also with e-dram or is that an xbox feature only ?

I think it would be better if XBox graphics patents were posted for discussion in this forum, to be honest.

i want to see what sort of software can take advantage of this and make dvd's look even better than they do. purevideo works quite well, an nvrep demonstrated it to us about 3 weeks ago, wonder what ati has in that department.

hdmi output (if dave is right) , crazy cool frontend taking advantage of this frame buffer to increase IQ, mmmmm drool for the htpc user.

so dave will r520 have dual dvi and hdmi? or like an hdmi daughter-board?

I should imagine that DVI will stay as standard on retail boards for a long time to come yet. HDMI will be offered in OEM configurations first, if an OEM demands it, and that demand will probably come from Media Center configurations first. One of the first boards you'll likely see HDMI on is a paltry X300.

Isn't HDMI basically just DVI+Digital Audio? Then why would you need audio capability on a graphics card?

You could probably route audio over the PCIe bus for any video file you might be playing.
