Remember, most buyers of any hardware (even ATI cards ) are uneducated plebs. :)

The german way of using caps is really difficult, sometimes even for us germans. But then there's one thing which I really hate about english syntax: You write almost everything is small caps (which is just fine to me), but the word "I" must be upper case. Now if that doesn't support egoism! In german we write "ich" in small caps. That teaches us to be humble...

And "me" is lower case. Yeah, the capitalization of "I" doesn't make all that much sense, given it's the only pronoun that is capitalized. And if the capitalization had to do with the fact that this pronoun is well-defined, considering people aren't supposed to refer to themselves in the third person, "I" becomes a name for the self, and thus should be capitalized, then you would also come to the conclusion that "me" should also be capitalized.

Anyway, I'm just not sure I buy the whole humble argument. The English language has a number of built-in grammatical rules that would seem to be along those same lines. One example is that whenever using yourself and another person or object as the subject or object of a sentence, you always put the appropriate "I" or "me" last (eg. He and I really kicked ass).

Huh? Which Ati/Nv cards are better value now? (or in last 3-6 months)
    Gf4? EOL, no stock
    8500/9100? EOL, no stock
    9000Pro? EOL, no stock
    9200? - with "very useable" SSAA and "great quality" AF (especially at 45 degrees...)?Who cares that 5200 can't run HL2 at 1024x768 with 4xAA & 8xAF ? What about 640x480 no AA/AF ? What about running some older titles at say, 800x600 2xAA/4xAF ?
Which is better - to be blind with both eyes or with one?
5200's are not a great cards. They're just best value cards available.
Hopefully, not so many people are crazy enough to buy 400$ card every year.

Implying that everyone buying a NV3x card instead of a R3xx card is stupid, is stupid.
Not much else to say, really.

You try running any kind of professional 3D app with a Radeon, jvd, then come back and tell me who's stupid...

In the meantime i'll enjoy my 5900U's stability in Maya and other 3D apps out there, plus a very very respectable performance in games too (to say the least)...

I know a lot of people that upgrade only once every 18 months or so. These buy the $200ish cards usally. If they did get the FX version then todays games like FarCry just wont run as nice. And tomorrows games? Yikes...

But a specific and novel application of a mathematical technique can be patented. In this case, a specific method of efficient bump mapping done in a localised coordinate space (i.e. aka DOT3) was patented by SGI. The patent is a bit dull to read but it's basically the same as their Siggraph paper (IIRC, "Efficient Bump Mapping...") of the same year.

Modulo arithmetic is pretty simple too, but RSA's application of it was certainly patentable.

in the latest MLA manuals, that rule is not there, and hasn't been there for 10 years. I had a huge argument in highschool with an english teacher about it, she ended trying to prove me wrong with a 40 year old copy... that had the rule in it. She couldnt seem to understand how the rule not being there anymore meant it is not considered a "rule" anymore.

Sorry for the OT but you need a manual to tell you that!!

Please rewrite 'He and I really kicked ass' according to the new manual. MLA didnt teach me how to speak properly so excuse my ignorance

Yes, I have to say that regardless (not irregardless, which I keep seeing) of whether something is in the manuals, certain things are just considered standard or correct English. 'He and I really kicked ass' and 'He spoke to Danny and me' (possibly 'myself', but certainly not I) for example.

chavvdarrr, I didn't know that all those cards were out of stock. I still see PC's sold with GF4MX's in them, so I assumed the other GF4's were still available. I guess that just leaves the 9200.

First, I think the majority of gamers (by that I mean anyone who plays games) with 5200's don't know about AA or AF. Generally, they're either prepackaged in their PC (with "DX9" in the computer description), or people just need to get a new card to replace a very old one or their crappy integrated graphics and go to Best Buy or something.

Second, I don't think the 5200's AA performance hit is that great. Take UT2003, for example (Tech Report numbers). A 9200 pro can give you 58 fps at 1600x1200 (a 5200 ultra is not too far back), and a 5200 Ultra can give you 51 at 1024x768 with 4xOGMSAA. I'd prefer the former due to it's crisper textures, but I understand that people with smaller monitors may prefer the latter.

My biggest point is that value buyers don't upgrade frequently, and HL2 DX8 performance is indicative of future shader performance for this card. 13 fps at 1024x768 means 33 fps (at best) at 640x480, and the 9200 will approximately double that.

Then there's the 64-bit / 128-bit thing with 5200's. When I try to compare prices it's hard separating the two. Does anyone know which one is cheaper among 128-bit cards? I know the 9200SE cards are cheaper than the 64-bit 5200's.

However, after looking at a few benchmarks, it looks like I underestimated the 5200. It seems to trade benchmarks with the 9200, and overall probably beats it, and since we really don't know how much shader content the future holds, the 5200 is certainly a good value card for today's games.

DemoCoder, I recant my criticism of the 5200. I still think your other statements were wrong (esp the about the 9600), but you have a point here.

wow, you seem to 100% miss the point.
The syle manual lists ALL of the rules. ALL.
    Get it yet? A L L
If it aint in there, its not an official rule anymore. Of course, feel free to laugh at me just because you dont understand.
Besides, i didnt "need a manual", so you can excuse your stupid shock emoticon. I KNEW of the "rule", but the assignment was to correct sentennces with the least possible number of changes, so i went the extra yard and checked to see if it was still a rule or just a CONVENTION. But hey, mock what you dont understand, eh?

I'm just wondering where MLA gets authority to create/destroy rules and if the rule was dropped, why? What makes a rule a rule and a convention a convention? Who decides?

I wouldn't run any profesional app on an fx card nor a radeon card anyway london boy.

I would buy a card meant for that .

But i have used my 9700pro in 3d stuido max and it runs stable and faster than my 5800 ultra .

you used 'you don't understand' twice in one post  :p that's pretty lame even for an attempted flame son. i'm sure all the girls are impressed by your imperious defense of the MLA manual but do yourself a favor and throw away the MLA and pull the stick outa your butt while you're at it. anyone (not you of course :D) so narrowminded as to allow common sense to fail in light of MLA's 'rules' is truly lacking in understanding IMNSHO.

That's just silly. Do you even know the differences between the gamer cards and pro cards? I got into this with Chalnoth earlier, gamer cards are usually not going to suffer any serious performance penalties in pro apps except under some rare conditions, and even then they are still quite usable. Can you give me specifics on why a pro card is nessesary? Because if not then one must question the validity of your opinion.
