This is one of the few XBLA classic game remakes that actually looks good to me.

Even for those that might already have R-Types for PS1 (and PSP), this new version of the classic games looks like it'll be worth it. Especially with 2-player gameplay (something the originals never had) and the ability to switch between new graphics and old graphics on-the-fly.

Most XBLA remakes or sequels of old games really turn me off with their cheap looking Flash-like or Java-like graphics. However the guys doing R-Type Dimensions have really impressed me. I'm really happy with this games touched-up high definition graphics. I even like the new angled perspective, which is optional for those that don't like it.

I'm definitely liking the new graphics. That said, I never got into R-Type as much as I did get into Blood Money, Xenon 2, Swiv 2, etc. But it's always nice to see remakes of these old titles done well.

I was really into R-Type back in 1989 and 1990 for the Sega Master System and TurboGrafx-16. I never got to play the original arcade version until I started using MAME in 2000, and I've still never seen a real machine. I liked R-Type so much that I've dreamed (actually had a dream, not just imagined) of a remake that was angled and in full 3D. Well this new version comes close to my dream. I was more than surprised when I first saw this at the time of TGS. Can't wait.

I think the 3d rendition lacks a lot of the charme of the original game. It's way too clean and sterile looking. Compared to the kick-ass remake of Bionic Commando it looks a bit disappointing.
The arcade mode with the original cabinet in 3d modeled around the game screen is a great idea, though. (most likely not all that practical, but ingenuous nonetheless)

I like the fact that you can switch between old original sprite graphics and new, HD graphics, on-the-fly, while playing.

You can also switch between new HD graphics in the new perspective, and normal perspective, too.

Well what do ya know, guess what guys, R-Type Dimensions should be released this Wednesday. Just when I was beginning to wonder about the status of this HD remake/remix of the first two R-Type games, the release date is announced and it's coming very, VERY soon. Link

I for one, will make the purchase, even though it's 1200 points/$15.

I only hope that more remakes of this quality are done in the near future.

I will get this game too just because there aren't too many old school schmups available on XBLA. The original R-Type is a classic, anyone who like schmups should really try out the original.

I just downloaded the trial and I'm very happy with what they've done. The Zaxxon perspective is pretty neat but I like playing in standard 3D perspective. The 2D is cool for nastalgia but I much prefer the 3D, it's done really well retaining the classic R-Type artstyle. The 3D lighting is cool too. I wish they had upgraded the sound to full MP3 orchestra tracks. Kinda odd that they dramatically upgraded the graphics but not the sound.
