Query about Xbox Live and the wirelessness

A friend of mine recently picked one up (Xbox), and would like to get on Live, but has an entirely wireless network. I know there's a solution this way, but are there other--cheaper--devices one can get to work with this as well? (Or do others require a bit of hacking?)

Well you just have to buy a wireless adpater for it. I saw one from linksys or oneof those reouter companies the other day, but there isn't any real way around it. What you're asking is kinda like asking if there's "other--cheaper--devices one can get to work with this as well? (Or do others require a bit of hacking?)" for a PC ;)

I mainly didn't know if "any ol' thang" would work, or if there was something specific about the Xbox that made it have to use its own adaptor. (I didn't THINK so, but you never know.)

There are most certainly wireless adaptors available for less that $110, so I couldn't imagine them getting away with charging that much unless there were something specific about it. (Heck, even the PS2 wireless adaptors I've seen have been around $40 or less.)

What's the latency like on wireless LANs anyways?
From what I've seen, pretty good. I've noticed for more problems coming from the broadband service than from the wireless connections. I have no specific numbers to mention, though, if that's what you're looking for.

you should be able to find an accespoint for much less money.
they all should work , a friend of mine uses a wifi xbox setup to stream his divx moviez from his pc to hit tv .. (don't ask)

maybe he should find a secondhand 11mb accespoint for 30$ or something? . since he will connect it to the ineternet with it, you don't need actually much faster speeds.

The thing with using the Microsoft Xbox branded access point is that it comes with a disc that runs on the Xbox to help setup the device. From what I understand if you were to use any other wireless device you would need to connect it to a PC first to set it up before connecting to the Xbox.

BTW, here are some other non-Microsoft wireless adapters that were marketed for the Xbox and PS2. Unfortunately they don't come with an Xbox disc like Microsoft's. Also, they might be more expensive than regular versions, but at least you know they're pretty much guaranteed to work.
