PS3 Game Res Question

Hi,

Really simple question (I hope) for all you PS3 owners, I've just got a PS3 and I have a 720p HD projector.

Currently the PS3 is set to auto res. The interface is running at 1080i which I like, and the PJ can accept 1080p24 so I want Blu-ray's to be played at that res, but the PS3 doesn't seem to detect this?

However playing RR7 last night I noticed it was running in 1080i, it looked great but is there a way of defaulting games to run at 720p while enabling 1080p for bluray and possibly 1080i for the interface?

Cheers :)

I don't believe there is.

The only time it does that is if the game only has 720p mode (Like Resistance when it caused all those problems for people with 1080i tv sets)

The only way to do it is to remove the 1080i mode from your settings, which is obviously going to make the interface also run at 720p.

If your PJ accepts 1080p you select 1080p ? why the 1080i thingy?

Thanks for clearing that up :)

As for the PJ, it is supposed to accept 1080p24 and depending on which spec sheet you read also 1080p30 & 60, however these do not get detected by the PS3. I only got the PS3 yesterday so haven't had time to play a blu-ray yet and try the force 1080p24.

Can you force 1080p60 to see if that works?

Thanks.

Are you sure that the projector doesn't just do 3:2 pulldown to 60Hz for the displayed content? I personally don't know any regular projector that would display 720p at 24Hz. If your projector displays movies 50/60Hz then there is no use for 1080p 24 for you and you should just set ps3 to output 720p. PS3 does the pulldown and downscaling of blu-rays to 720p just fine (same goes for upscaling of dvd's to 720p too) Of course if the scaler in your projector is better than ps3 then you would want to send 1080p24 content but I believe this would not be likely...

You can force ps3 to output 1080p24 from the settings in 1.9 firmware.

Even if it's not detected, you can add 1080p to the supported resolutions via the display configuration, or so I think.

First questions first - which firmware are you running?

I run my ps3 on a 720p projector also... And I dont see the point of running 1080i, as its a 720p projector and 1080i will just get scaled down to 720p :)

Thanks for all the replies.

I'm running FW 1.9.

I'm not really bothered about 1080p (as stated PJ is only 720p) except for the *possibility* that 1080p24 *may* actually refresh at a multiple of 24Hz and thus remove the need for 3:2 pull down on Blu-ray.

The PJ is an inFocus IN76, I havn't been able to find any comments on how it's 1080p24 support functions, although I have since read that 1080p60 is supported, however not important how the PS3 scalles Blu-ray to 720p.

The only reason I like the interface at 1080 is the size and I assumed it would be larger if I set the res to 720p?

looks like I should just disable 1080i mode :)

Thanks again.

Afaik there is no 2/3 pulldown on 1080/24p PJs they just up the HZ so it matches, for example to 72hz.

While that is true for some 1080p PJ's and many of the Plasmas which accept 1080p24, such as the pioneer's, etc.

Some LCD and Plasma TV's, and probably my PJ accept 1080p24 but are not capable of refreshes at a multiples of 24Hz, and instead still refresh at 60Hz.

Thus the display has to re introduce the 3:2 pulldown to display the image, thus totally negating the point of accepting 1080p24 in the first place, but getting the box tick for 1080p24 input! Crazy!

Some games render at higher resolutions when using 1080 line outputs, and in getting downscaed to your projector that oversampling improves image fidelity.

Hmm that sucks, one of the things i noticed when i watched my first Blu-Ray movies was the stuttering pans. I did notice before on DVD´s but it didn´t annoy so much. There is 2 reasons, one is that i´m closer to the screen now, thanks to the higher res it´s not a problem. Because of the higher resolution and the sharper picture and added detail the "effect" is even more evident.

I would really hate to go back to the old ways and i´m glad i didn´t end up with one of the old cheap HD-DVD players like i planned to.

The XMB bar looks alot better when i run my PS3 in 1080p instead off 720p, guess thats why :)

However, 720p encoded video is a bit more soft, i would really like a dynamic resolution switch depending on the video resolution :)

Morning, just thought I'd give a quick update:

1) PJ does accept 1080p60 and GT HD looks better at 1080p60 than 720p60, which is probably due to the downscaling giving some AA?

2) I haven't tried any Blu-rays yet, hope to borrow some off my brother at the weekend but the PJ does accept 1080p24 as it passed the test, however until I get a Blu-ray I won't be able to confirm if the display is refreshed at 60Hz (/w 3:2 pull down :( ) or a multiple of 24Hz.

3) DVD's can be upscalled to 720p or 1080p, however I haven't compared which looks better yet, but I assume 720p will look the best.

Thanks for all your help :)
