I really don't know what's going on, everytime i open Explorer (even just My Documents), CPU usage goes through the roof (98-100%), while i still have around 700MB Ram free, the whole system is obviously very slow, and as soon as i close the window, everything goes back to normal!!!
What's wrong?
I defrag'ed the hard drive, hoping it would sort the problem out, but it's still there...

I have an A64, 1GB Ram, 160GB HDD.

Anyone knows what the hell is going on?

Well, i've done the regedit thing, but the issue is still there. I verifed 3 times, rebooting each time, and the line is not there. Explorer still takes 100% CPU time when i open a folder with videos in it...

Anyone??

Oh, i might add, i have Win XP Professional. And i tried this again, it doesn't work. It seems to be really bad with MPEG2 files.

I still need help. If you need to discuss what other browsers you use, do it in another thread.
Unless you can give me a browser to download that's perfect...

I'll recomend you try out Firefox (or Firebird, or whatever they're calling the latest incarnation of Mozilla's quick/speedy browser) as I really like it myself and find I have a LOT less problems with it than IE.

As for your problems, run adaware and spybot yet?

And by the way, the problem is not an Internet problem, it's a system problem, happens when opening My Documents and any folders that contain MPEG2 or other video files.

Switch off Start Up Programs and all Non MS Services from boot up.
I have heard of a similar problem with .avi files but not mpeg2.

What else? Oh when it happens again look into task manager to see what thread is causing the high CPU usage..

If you still have the problem post back with your findings......

Lastly jsut plug in your Mouse/KB/Monitor whilst doing the above and try replicate the problem.

hm , i had the exact same problem a few days back (i had some MPG files ripped from a vcd) .. strange, but don't have it anymore

i think

Regarding registry editing to prevent movie 'preview' in via WMP in Explorer:

The correct registry entry seems to vary. (I guess there could be differences between languages, WMP versions, Windows versions, whatever ...)You should be able to find the correct Class-ID if you edit the file 'standard.htt'. Look for the call to IsMovieFile(ext) where the WMP details should be listed. This should lead you to the correct registry entry and furher to the dll causing the problem. I have seen no ill effects from either renaming the file or deleting the registry entry. WMP appears to work fine regardless.

Alternatively you could make a copy of standard.htt and edit it to act in whatever way you like when you browse movie files. Then use the 'Customize this folder...' function to assign your edited template (script) to whatever folders you like. This way, for example, you can selectively choose witch folders should have movie preview and which ones that should not.

Edit: I just remembered that XP has disabled lots of the web view customization features. My memory escapes me on how to track it down (not on a XP machine ATM), but I think the filename for the shell extension is 'shmedia.dll'. Try unregistering the dll, reboot, and see if your problems have gone away.

do you mean it was never there?
that entry?
because it should have been.
The above poster is correct, the issue is (most likely) with the oh so crappy shmedia.dll

Hey i'm back. thanks everyone. Right, the line was obviously there, and i took it off, and the problem persists.
At the moment the only solution i've found is to have My Docs opening up as a menu on the "start" menu thing, so i don't have to open up any wondows and the system doesn't slow down when i want to access what's there. Still it's awkward when i need to move files and stuff, just because i'm not used to "cut and paste", but just to dragging the icons.

Tahir, the thread that takes 99% CPU time is iexplorer. And it only starts happening when opening folders which contain fairly big MPEG2 files, in the region of 1-3 GB each. Or opening folders that are "one level up" (i mean, i open a folder which contains another folder which contains the video file). Might happen with other kind of files, but so far i can only talk for MPEG2 files cause that's what's happening.

Also, the problem doesn't seem to be related to the "preview" aspect, since i have it turned off all the time, and i always opt for "explore folders" when opening a window, which takes away the details of the files (on the left hand side). And also because it starts happening even before i actually open the folder which contains the file, or even before clicking on the file.

Me not happy.
