Given the game is OpenGL, there is a minimum of overhead. Not like with DirectX where you can easily become draw-call limited. That the AMD-OGL driver is possibly borked is another thing. My experience with 3D-software is that they want me to by a FirePro to have correct refresh in the view-port. I can imagine Rage pushes the boundary and AMD is now forced to become as carefull with their regular OGL-stack as with their FirePro OGL-stack.

On nvidia I see less, but there are still times when I see it. BTW mutant bash was hilarious fun for me. The monkey business part specifically.
(I would still be playing, but a, holding my kid :))

I'm going to try it on the 560 in about an hour. Will see....

Maybe the bad texture pop in is because the tile cache has been set too small on PC?

4096x4096 compared to the 8192x8192 that it is meant to use?

I see another brown shooter. The fancy texturing technology is just a pretty wrapping over what seems to be an entirely forgettable game otherwise. I've got enough stuff to play right now without wasting my time on this one.

I am just happy that unlike HL2 I can actually use the crossbow when I want. I hated how there was no bolts in that game b/c since painkiller I have been enamored with crossbows/stake guns.

Ok I spent about 2 hours playing on the GTX 560 Ti. There is still pop-in but I think it's less of an issue than with the 6950 (textures seem to come in faster). Can't say megatexturing isn't controversial with that pop in. Performance is pretty good but it does stutter due to HDD access I think. There is almost continuous HDD activity so I'm surprised that it doesn't stutter more than it does. I have it running 60fps most of the time at 2720x1536 with 4X AA (that's me doing downscaling on my 1360x768 TV). I do have to force vsync on NV too though.

Honestly while yes there are a lot of poor textures around, I think the game looks in a class of its own with respect to outdoor vistas and such. Some areas are awe inspiring and very detailed but of course could always benefit from more resolution etc. The characters look pretty good too. Spend less time examining screenshots and more time looking at it in motion.

It plays like a sort of Fallout 3 / Borderlands / Red Faction: Guerilla. There are even some Fallout related trinkets around, undoubtedly thanks to Bethesda owning id. I think it's quite entertaining so far. The atmosphere is good. It's not goofy like Fallout or Borderlands. It has a sort of western feel to it but also sometimes a bit of a horror touch too. There is some ambient music that adds to it. The gun play is good and the enemy AI has some interesting behavior. The game intros various weapons pretty quick and most are upgradeable or can use different ammo types. The driving is interesting and not annoying at all (it's like RF:G). Not much to dislike here IMO.

Sounds like a good Steam sale pickup once it gets patched up a bit.

I don't get the popin. Is 1GB of VRAM not enough to cache what's around you? And if not why don't they store 4-8GB of texture data in main RAM and transfer it really really fast to the GPU when it's needed?

It's just that if the consoles experience a small amount of popin the PC should experience none. IMHO of course :)

I imagine there is a very good reason that the programmers are fully aware of and have had sleepless nights over. ;) Carmack's keynote touched on some of the problems they had with figuring out how to cache textures. Transferring from system RAM sounds like AGP texturing and we know what that used to do to game performance. It would be cool if the game could use more RAM of my 2GB 6950 though! I saw it using only 640MB.

His keynote didn't really make it sound like they were having such a hard time managing the issue though. It's clear when playing it that loading textures in anticipation of player view is a fundamental problem with this technology and they have most definitely not solved it in a very satisfactory way. Unless it's a lot better on consoles (haven't looked much).

You can force vsync in your video card control panel. That's what I do. The game was supposed to have a sort of vsync but it doesn't seem to work very well.

You can set the page size via .cfg file.
Also negative lod is possible, should be nice with SSAA and forcing load of mipmaps tad earlier.

Forcing 16xAF in the game or via NVCP causes visible texture seams. Anyone got the same?

p.s.: Looks like 8xAF is OK and there's no artifacts.

More seriously, are they gonna release higher res textures for PC ?

Megatexture (or virtual texturing) does not work with hardware anisotropic filtering.
