Palm Releases New Information on the Foleo

Palm, Inc. is currently demonstrating the Foleo to developers at the LinuxWorld conference, and as part of this process has officially revealed additional details on this upcoming model. Some of these facts were previously available, but not officially.
Processor
The first device on Palm's new Mobile Companion category of products will be built around a 416 MHz Intel/Marvell PXA27x processor.
In addition, it will sport a Marathon 2700G graphics accelerator to increase the speed of its graphical user interface, and to allow it to connect to an external monitor. This news should give heart to those who are hoping that a video player will eventually be released for this model.
Storage
The Foleo will have 128 MB of RAM for holding currently running applications, and 256 MB of non-volatile memory. Roughly half of its built-in storage will be used by the operating system and bundled applications, and the rest will be available to users.
For additional long-term storage, this model will have a CompactFlash slot located behind its battery. The largest card it supports is 4 GB.
It will also have an SD card slot. According to Palm, the Foleo can't use high-capacity SD cards, which limits it to 2 GB ones. However, several people have reported that demo units they tried were able to read their SDHC cards.
Networking
Infrastructure and ad-hoc Wi-Fi networking configurations will supported by the Foleo. Open, WEP, WPA, and 802.1X Enterprise security configurations will be available to users, while WPA2 will not.
At launch, this model will not include software to allow users to transfer files via a Bluetooth connection, but this device's developer notes make it clear that it would be possible for a third-party to create the necessary software.
These notes also re-iterate something that had been known earlier: the USB port on the Foleo mobile companion will support the standard mass storage profile. Any flash drive or standard hard drive that conforms to this profile will be automatically mounted upon connection. It will support both FAT16 or FAT32.
Coming Soon
The Foleo Mobile Companion will be released in the coming weeks, although Palm has not yet announced exactly when.
This date can't be far in the future, because developers of the LinuxWorld conference who were willing to attend a seminar about writing applications for the Foleo -- and sign an Non-Disclosure Agreement -- were given a unit, already in its retail packaging.
