I've looked on the web and can't find a good how to guide.

I want to be able to share the printer that my wife and I have between our computers. We have a standard router and the printer is plugged into her machine.

I had it set up to where we had the drives shared and could access each others machine, but that's gone now too.

What the hay am I doing wrong? we're both using XP pro (could that be the problem? lol)

your router will need a prog, to set up print share. Yhat is if the printer is hooked to the router.

The printer is not plugged to the router, it's plugged into his wife's PC.

Anyway, make sure your printer isn't blocked by a software firewall. That's probably the reason why the shared drives don't work as well. If you're using the WinXP software firewall, it's a simple checkmark in the firewall options.
