Only the highest flavor of the creature type leveling makes sense indeed.

Did you notice whether the leveling affects anything besides the mob HP at all?

However it's done, they are all puny and weak against Poophead the archer/ thief/ acrobat.

I think it also affects damage, spell points, and fatigue points.

Anyway, I think they really f'ed up on the health multipliers here. I don't think any opponent should have a health multiplier of more than 15, perhaps 20 at the most. Maybe this afternoon I'll see if I can't start tweaking the multipliers to make the game less tedious (I'd also increase the damage to compensate...).

Well, sure, provided you either make use of lots of powerful poisons, or continually sneak attack from the shadows. But no matter your character, it takes far too long to take down a Goblin Warlord. A health multiplier of 30 (which means minimum health of 540) is just insane. They may be easy, but taking that long to kill is just stupid. Maybe tonight I'll start working on my own little mod to tweak mob hps.

I'll post my questions here and see if anyone still reads this huge thread - someone may have asked the same questions before, but I admit that I haven't read all 18 pages.

    1. Is there any point to closing down Oblivion Gates one encounters in the wilderness? Apart from getting another sigil stone. It's not that much fun, is it really worth it? Also, do the sigil stones come in any special order?

    2. If the opponents get tougher along with my leveling up, why should I be trying to level up?

I really haven't played far, but these things nag at me...

There's no point other than what your character takes back with him/her. At high levels, Oblivion gates are a good place to get some Daedric gear, and a fair amount of magical items. The sigil stones (which are completely random) are also the only way to enchant gear without joining the mage's guild, and even then are often more powerful.

You face new and different opponents. New quests become available (particularly many of the Daedric Shrine quests). New items become available.

    1. There is no real need, and the Sigil stones are random and level adjusted, just like any other loot.

    2. Without mods, it makes no real difference.

i think i take them down just like all the rest. i had to stop a goblin war (i have 2 of those totems now).

i rarely use poisons...however my bows are usually enchanted (unless i forget and let it run out)...that coupled with 3x sneak damage...is a 1 shot deal.

even if they see me, 1 shot (as long as enchanted). i think i've had as much as much as 4 arrows shot though (rare).

recently i've had the most trouble when my horse gets in a fight and im trying to defend it. the opponent seems to be able to dodge my shots alot...or i hit my horse.

i like it that way, because im more into the exploring and looting. i like the combat, don't get me wrong, just want to get it overwith quicker. i think the thing i like most about archer is trying for really long distance shots. estimating arc. i can shoot lions in valleys from mountaintops. it's just neat caves, oblivion gates, etc when you shoot an arrow a long way and you wait and wait....watching the target...then..."3x attack damage" score!

Yeah, that's my take as well. Mostly I think the creature hitpoints are far too high, so I tweaked mob hps way down, while significantly increasing mob damage. I'm currently in the process of testing it...

Well I guess I scored big time with this $200 Dual DVI X800GTO2 @ X850XT PE speed. LOL. I can't believe how poorly the 6800s do. No wonder this laptop with 6800Go struggles so much with it compared to my desktop. I don't even run run Bloom on the laptop and I still can't keep it above 18fps usually at 1440x900 with zero grass! Forget that HDR schtuff! Of course, the 6800Go is a 12 pipe chip and I can only get 'er up to about 385/770. Little bit more horsepower in the X850XT PE. But, a 6800GT at 400/1050 still can't touch the X850XT from my experience.

Here's hoping for some driver miracles from both teams. ATI already pulled off that HDR+AA hack.

Yeah, what is wrong with G6 in Oblivion? Pretty atrocious. No _pp optimization?

There's a partial precision option in the game ini. It defaults to enabled. So maybe the game is already using some.

Why is 6600GT beating 6800GS? That seems VERY strange.

I'm at level 13 now and my marksmanship, despite being my primary combar skill, just doesn't seem to cut it. Sure, the 3x bonus is nice and I always open my battles with one, but in general mobs are so tough now, that it barely takes off more than maybe 1/4th or 1/3rd of their health. The only time I have 1 shot kills is with low level stuff like deer, rats, mudcrabs, the ocasional low-level bandits or goblins, but all of the more advanced stuff takes ages to take down purely with bow & arrow. I'm using Oscuro's Oblivion Overhaul though, maybe its different in the unmodded game...

that's odd. what's your profile? im archer/thief/acrobat. i leveled sneak way up early by sneaking everywhere (even forgot i was in sneak mode largely) till after the first story mission. i think my marksman started above 40 a little.

anyway, i can 1 shot people in groups and the others draw their weapons, but don't see me.

i do get into periodic segments (after leveling i think) where combat gets a little tougher (especially not in sneak mode) doesn't last though.

you enchanting your bow? i have quite a collection.

*edit* oh wait...i think i also playing on about easiest setting on slider...maybe a little up from that.

there is a dufficulty slider right?

Yeah there is one, I just never touched it. Might have something to do with the differing experiences though. ;)

Overall I'm not finding the game too difficult, although I did level up a bit too fast and my attributes suffered (pitfall when you level on everyday skills like acrobatics). I'm playing an Agent BTW. For my next char I'm going to use one of the MODs that slow down your levelling a bit, I play something that feels more like a lvl. 7 character, but am actually almost twice as high already.

I've got a question, maybe somebody can help me:
Instead of appearing cloaked, even a lowly 15% chameleon enchantment makes me completely dissapear from screen (including my FPS-view weapons, which sucks for combat). Also, NPCs that use such effects (like the Dark Brotherhood recruiter) dissapear completely, except for a small transparent horizontal bar that shows up in their place. I seem to remember reading somewhere (a thread or twekaguide, can't remember) that something can mess up the invisibility/chameleon effects in the game, but I can't seem to find that particular piece of information again and haven't found another solution anywhere yet. Somebody got an idea?

Well, I haven't tested it that much yet (takes a lot of time in this game!) but I made a little mod that decreases the hps of most of high-level creatures in the game while increasing their damage. This includes goblins (especially goblins), the brown bear, minotaurs, ogres, the land dreugh, and many of the undead. I didn't touch any of the Daedra, summoned creatures, or NPC's.

Let me know what you think, or any suggestions, and maybe I'll clean it up and submit it to some mod website soon :)

I've got bad news about mod conflicts.

To reduce mod conflicts, Bethesda made it so, that there can only be a single mod that changes any object. So, if you have a mod that attaches a script to some object, and you add another mod that changes, for example, the weight of that object, it will completely replace the previous object.

So, objects can only be changed once, no matter how many mods do so. The last one loaded wins, and discards ALL other changes.

What this means is, that it has become extremely easy to break things. Like in the example above: the script is removed, so it will never run. If that's an important script, the first mod is completely broken. It would (worst case) require you to run the same mods the player does when creating your new mod.

So, instead of making things better, it made it much worse. Sure, that last mod you added will definitely run without any conflicts (as long as you don't add any newer mod), but it might break everything else, or at least it removes any previous change to any object it modifies.

Btw, it is not advisable to use long integers in scripts, as everything is written to disk as single precision floats. Strangely enough, most calculations are done with ints (truncated), to remove all possible discrepancies when the user manually adds displayed values.

Verdict: while their ideas are great and their artwork superb, they should fire half the managers and hire some decent programmers.

Ouch. Yeah, a mod manager that at least identified conflicts for you to decide which one to keep would seem to be the minimum answer.
