And with those settings you're getting what kind of FPS?

    John,

there have been some reports of low texture quality on the forums. Some posted screenshots looked like poor texture filtering settings (like plain bilinear), but others made it look like some of the textures were very low res themselves. Any thoughts?

God dammit. Why the hell do you get to live in an area where they blatantly disregard the blackout?

Too busy playing at first. Just ran some indoor/outdoor and I'm pulling around 30fps on average. At least according to Fraps.

As for textures, they're very detailed. The bad texturing comes in at times with the terrain LOD. Distant hills can be painted with very low textures, which is the only sore spot with the game I've noticed so far (and just noticed it, since I got moving around outdoors more).

Make that 5 minutes of being impressed for me. :)

Would someone who hated Morrowind with a passion like Oblivion?
Are the changes big enough for me to like it?

And this compared to NO distant hills in Morrowind...

People seem to be complaining a lot about the LOD. Granted, the LOD implementation doesn't seem to be sophisticated enough to do dynamic tessalation and smooth imperceptible transitions without popping, but I haven't yet seen an example of a game of this scale doing any better...

I'll take blurry textures from 0.5 mi out to a nearly infinite horizon over crisp textures to a fog wall 1 mi out any day.

    Let's see... I've taken out the trash, done the dishes, hung up the laundry, scooped the cat box, cleaned the bedroom and the dining area thingy, downloaded her favorite TV shows, planned dinner, swept the floors and bought the groceries. I figure i'm a need me some brownie points later tonight ^^;;;;

This is one of those games that makes me seriously consider buying a PC.

Running it 1680x1050 4X AA 4X AF on a X850XT PE (actually X800GTO2 gone turbo).
Runs ok. Not quite as well as FarCry, but it looks better.

I watched task manager on my dual core opteron here and I didn't see it really hitting both cores. It usually was around 58% CPU utilization.

Cool game so far. A lot like Morrowind in many ways, but a lot different too.

Some reason you two arent maxing AF, 8 and 4? Is it that much more detrimental to performance because of LOD? Even in FEAR i had it maxed on an X800 because the hit was only a few FPS difference. Only ask because ATI has usually been very good with AF and its effect on performance, so much so that i've left it forced max quality in the cp.

And no impressive screenshots yet, i'm a bit peeved at you.

I havent bought a game for almost a year, may go out tomorrow and pick this up though, hardware would thank me, what a waste its been; aside from being the first person to load a new map every DOD or CS game *yippie*.

    Regarding the aggressive LOD:

Oblivion uses locational "cells", just like Morrowind. What's happening is that the game isn't loading textures for any cell except the one the player is currently standing in. I don't have the game yet, so I can't toy with it myself, but you might want to look in the .ini file under [LOD] and see if any of those settings affect it.

I'm certain there must be a way to force it to load textures for the nearest cell.

Shots from some places I went to quick for some shots. 1680x1050 4X AA, 4X AF (don't need it overly sharp IMO). Not sure what in-game settings, mostly the default for the X850 I have. Framerates range from 18fps outside sometimes, to 50fps+ inside. Playable for me. View distance is friggin unlimited seriously. It really dumps the detail in the distance though. You can actually turn off the super far distance, it's separate from the "draw distance", and then you get lots of fog. The game has tons of detail settings to mess with. Oh, and as far as I can tell, view distance is not upward adjustable from where it starts. You can adjust foliage and object draw distance though. That kills performance quick if I max those out. They affect how close the trees convert to 2D, how far objects such as piers appear out, and when the grass shows up. There are some settings for water detail/quality that I leave maxed out. Shadows have some options too, and you get more with SM3.0 (some greyed out on X850 vs 6800 I have). 6800GT runs the game well. Nothing I've run the game on has run it really fast. And that fits with what we've heard about X1900s running it pretty well.

Loading screens are usually very short, especially outdoors. Outdoors loads completely unobtrusively with no pause in gameplay. Going indoors causes brief loading screen.

Sound is excellent. Nice ambient music. Voiceovers are pretty good. Some better than others, as usual. Coulda used more voice actors though, lots of duplication. 'Course then they woulda needed like an army of people, heh.

9600 and 9700NP are fully capable of running the game at reduced quality. 9700 runs it pretty darned well considering how old the card is. Ran at 1280x768 medium settings I suppose. 9600 should go to 800x600. But it does definitely work pretty well. My 9600 is in a eMachines A64 3000+ notebook, and it's a 64MB 9600 too at 300/200 clocks.
