I notice that you " "'d Normally. (so this isn't directed at you, just a general fact :) )

XP Professional + Service Pack 2, + /3GB Boot.ini command switch = 4gb memory cap In Windows XP (with 64bit cpus of course). It's a little more complicated with Server 2003 and 4gb rarely works on your average system. I run 3gb of ram in my current system and it's been perfect from day one, never a problem :)

fwiw, the US does of course have SMS, but charges per message tend to be relatively high, and the technology levels of the populace, and even the locales are too disparate. Until something is really fully in popular use, you won't see US companies adopting those methods. In European cities it seems they adopt newer technologies a bit more quickly.

Sure. But since no single process can use more than 2GB, all that you buy by going over 2GB is the ability to prevent other running processes from taking up some of that 2GB for your game (or whatever program is using the most memory). With Windows XP, I doubt that will usually save you more than about 300-400MB.

    forgive my density... but i'm confused. the 1024x768 screens look pretty crappy to me, and the "high quality" video i downloaded was of what i'd consider an unplayable framrate -- and also not very high quality... i do still love the draw distances and the foliage... but it seemed to me to pretty much indicate that i would NOT want to play this on a 9800 Pro. Now of course we're going to have different standards and I certainly am not trying to diss your tastes -- I'm just wondering, did I miss something here? it looks to me to say, buy a new video card -- or else ;_; making me fearful ;_;

The devil's still in the details.

    Yes.

First, you missed the part where I pointed out I have a noticably better cpu then the system they used. Second, you missed the part where my vidcard is better then there's--- mine is flashed and overclocked so it's better then a standard 9800pro. Third, you missed the part where I said I'd been expecting 640x480 low detail to be the only thing that would run. Fourth, you missed the part where I said I "might" (and I even used italics for emphasis) be able to run 10x7 medium.

I certainly never made any absolute statements about how it'd run and I never said middling hardware would produce an ultimate experience. My system's results should be better then I'd expected... but that's not saying much.

Something I had in mind but didn't mention was those worried that their 6800gt's or x850's won't run the game well enough.

ahh ok :) i'm just worried that those videos looked like the 10x7 settings -- no, actually like both settings were pretty choppy. :p i hate the chops! T_T i guess we'll see...

    Ahem...
    I still use a 9700Pro....

Of course I am planning to use Oblivion as an excuse to upgrade my gpu (and mobo) :)

(although I might be cpu limited, like Morrowind. Luckily my cpu is a bit more recent: Athlon64 3400+)

The videos were choppy because they were recorded with FRAPS. The site says that the gameplay is very smooth when they're not recording.

It's great that so many people still use 9700/9800 Pro/Xt's.

I still have a Sapphire 9700 Pro sitting here....sadly it needs a few replacment transistors on the backside near the power connector as the old ones got a drop of water on them and now it's just artefact city :(

yeah i upgraded from my 9700pro to my current x1900xtx

    excerpt from pcgamer Oblivion review:

"On a bleeding edge system with an ATI X1900XTX video card, Oblivion is silky-smooth and its graphics appear almost photo-realistic. To assess how well Oblivion plays on a more typical machine, pay particular attention to the video card (something you didn't need to do so much with Morrowind, which was very CPU-dependent). The video card must be no more than three years old (Nvidia FX or better), and becasue Oblivion relies a great deal on pixel-shaders, more recent cards will be much better, as they handle shader instructions more efficiently. Gamers with older supported video cards will have to sacifice some visual fidelity by tweaking graphical options (viewing distance, shadow rendering, and so on) to sustain a decent performance level. In my opinion, the best bang-for-the-buck Oblivion upgrade is an ATI X800 video card."

    woot!

True to form, I've turned off HDR. Can't stand the lack of AA in the game and bloom does a decent job. Playing on a standard clocked 1800 XT at 1920x1200 with 4x AA, 8x HQ AF, bloom, and every single in-game graphics option (except for grass shadow, which is off) maxed out. Perfectly playable for me. And the game is gorgeous, absolutely, breathtakingly gorgeous. The game also has incredibly immersive aural feedback; donned a pair of iron boots and suddenly felt like an encumbered tank moving through a dungeon, with the heavy clocking of my boots clanking on the stone floor. A nice contrast to the wispy quietness of the leather shoes I was wearing before discovering the iron boots. Combat is also far more visceral than Morrowind's, and definitely more involving. The ability to block with weapon or shield and the options to perform special attacks if timed correctly add more depth to the hand-to-hand combat than Morrowind's whack-a-mole fighting.

I've only played for two hours, but so far I'm very impressed.
