AMD WHQL drivers show up in Windows Update for me as optional updates. I only notice this on my HTPC since I rarely update the video drivers for that. Don't currently have a system with an Nvidia card in it (sold my last one just a couple months ago) so can't comment on their WHQL drivers.

295 branch drivers fixes many problems and presents new features..

    • Fixes custom resolutions, proper 4K support for downsampling.. i can use 5760x1080@60Hz or 3840x2160@48Hz, 3360x1890@60Hz with single card on single monitor
    • aside FPS Limiter, there is also Temperature Limiter now
    • 3 new VSYNC options no available info about

Temperature Limiter doesnt touch any fan profile or clock speed, it just decreases GPU load

If you used 5760x1080 wouldnt you only get the horizontal pixels downsampled on a 1920x1080 lcd ?
and why would you want to use 48hz afaik monitors dont support that refresh rate ?

yeah 5760x1080 just for benchies, no resonable usage

my monitor supports 48Hz so it's handy..

This driver breaks Civ V. Flickering textures to the point of migraines. Unplayable.
    ...what's that...79what? 7970?

    Hmmm.

48hz lets 24fps film play smoother than 60hz.

I'm back to 285.xx since I'm a Civ V crack whore of late. Even tried a driversweeper full clean install of 295.73 to no avail. Seems nvidia is giving SLI the CFX treatment (disabling SLI is the fix, but there goes surround). Hurry up and release Kepler so I can rationalize a 7970.

For some reason I don't see it.
If I ever installed a driver manually, does it means I won't get updates through Windows Update?

I have never seen a video driver appear on windows update on my PC. Not even as optional IIRC.

Uninstall your video drivers, reboot, refresh Windows Update. You should be offered drivers. Even XP WU offers them. I have seen WU offer older drivers or even incorrect drivers for say NICs.

with older hardware windows 7 just lets you hunt for old drivers, even hardware that was so common you'd think it could be supported. and lets you stuck in 60Hz if you run in VESA mode, where linux will let you run at 85Hz at least.

but amazingly enough you can feed him a windows 2000 driver for a NIC.

For older hardware (hardware in existence before Win7 launched), Windows includes manufacturer provided drivers for the hardware. No control panels obviously, only the drivers. Vista was the same way.

Now, sometimes said manufacturers didn't provide Microsoft with good drivers (Nvidia, HP, Creative Labs comes to mind with regards to default manufacturer drivers for Vista).

So if I stuck in a 4870 into my Win7 box for example. Without updating drivers I have hardware accelerated 2560x1600 available out of the box and capable to jumping into games. Of course, if the hardware is really obscure, then there's always a chance no driver was provided to MS for inclusion.

by older hardware I mean 2002 or something :), I believe XP went quite further in time than 7, or I may mix things up with 9x too. I remember support for 3com ISA boards and 1MB PCI video clunkers.

so they didn't include 2000/XP drivers, they included Vista/7 drivers only. thus for pre-Vista drivers you get to hunt but still such level of binary driver compatibility is excellent.

In Windows XP, it only included generic VGA drivers for video cards out of the box. So basically any video card every made (VGA and up), would theoretically have worked. Of course with that you had very limited resolutions (800x600x256 max IIRC) as well limited to no hardware acceleration.

XP does include many video drivers with full acceleration. I think you have to go back to like Windows 386 to find no in-box video drivers for some cards.
