For those new to Cell, and the Sony Patents that relate to the "Broadband Engine" and "Visualiser" that were initially thought to be the make-up of PS3, here is a PPT that appears to explain things fairly susinctly.

Just think of SPU's as VU's on steroids.

In fact, the best way to describe Cell is to think of it as a PS2 on steroids. (1 + 2 -> 1 +8)

So much for your rational comments...

Link. If you go back, you can see the NPD data that confirms this.[/quote]

LOL - you just failed miserable AGAIN:

There's nothing similar you claimed, kid - another cheap distortion... Why I'm not surprised at all?

For the benefit of those not too into console scene, that has way too much spin to it. Someone already said average Xbox games are PS2 port.

There is then the subjectivity of whats graphically on par mean. I honestly see good difference between Xbox and PS2. Vince probably will argue strongly for great difference PS2 and DC but little Xbox and PS2.

Cmon vince, we also did the if if if so many times. If Sega had use the later Naomi2 board, if Nintendo start GC at $299 instead of $199, if MS have more time than 18 months to throw off the self parts...

PS2 for its time as good as is flawed. GS is damn not that great against competition its time, PS2 games have the ugliest, blandest and flatest display.

You love your Sony but stop such deceit.

Ah, yes.....I'd like to see the PS2 game that can compete with the X-Box launch games in graphics, let alone more recent ones.

Of the early PS2 games, IMO ICO stands out.

Well, you can look for it yourself if you want a better want, there are higher res images available if you look, I don't want to be accused of stealing images from sites.

You don't have to steal them. You can link to pages that include them.

But no, I really don't buy it. The PS2 may have close to the geometry power of the X-Box, but it just doesn't have the memory required to display textures at as high of resolutions, or the programmability in the pixel pipelines.

You're just stating the fact, but launched Xbox games weren't that great looking.

Heh, you might want to read that article you linked a little bit. For one, that game, in order to get a bit more texture memory, rendered at half-resolution. So no, there won't be higher-resolution images available of that game.

Ohh I know too well about half resolution rendering.

There are higher-resolution images available, created for magazines prints. I just can't remember where they are.

Fine, but they won't be indicative of actual gameplay, now will they?

They are, it's just higer res. Its like changing the resolution setting on PC games, while keeping the other setting the same. It doesn't look any better its just higher res.

Obviously you don't have this luxury on console, so developers need to take these screens for print.

Of course games look better at higher res, otherwise why would people give a flying Flutie about $500 video cards?

Higher-res textures are also a big part of better IQ, IMO, and I doubt the 4MB PS2 can compete with the 64MB (unrealistic max, obviously) Xbox in that regard. IIRC, the 8MB (+S3TC) Dreamcast beat it there, too.

Ico seems to be a great example of art direction, but that's a somewhat separate issue from "nice graphics."

Higher res, is just that, you get more pixels, if screen size stays the same, smaller pixels. The shading of quality of the pixel doesn't change.

It doesn't help if you can't see the "shading" of the pixels.

So has this been posted yet?
Sounds like they actually are doing something for the sony folks, and it sounds like if we find out about the GPU in the PS3 we will know more about their next product...

Name one PS2 game that looks better than one of:
    Halo
    DOA 3
    Rallisport: Challenge

    Cheers
