Right, I just called them "application" profiles since I think that's what ATI called them. Or at least, before it was implemented that's what people were calling them. Guess that's a bad description now that we have "real" application profiles brought to us by NVIDIA though.

Seeing as how games like Diablo2 absolutely hate having FSAA on, I would love to see some real application profiles in ATI's drivers.

Yep. that's it. And it's very annoying even on a CRT mind you. I was busting my head for 2 months to figure out why at times the text on my 19" Iiyama master pro was crappy although everything else (games included) looked awesome compared to lesser monitors in work. Apparently this image sharpening bug is at fault, it turns itself on every time you click on the nvidia control panel tab FFS...the fastest way to get rid of it then is to change resolution and then change back to your original res.
    sheesh this totally sucks

I think it would be even better if anyone actually understood what Terry meant by that ;)

Hmm, has anyone else noticed the AA tooltip? Is 16x a known planned feature of NV40? Or am I drunk and missing the obvious?

Terry you should also have versioned drivers. So, you could run one game with 4.1 drivers and an old game with 3.7 drivers. I know it is a problem with all vendors that you fix a problem for one game and break another. It might be difficult to implement though. I think it would be possible however.

I've never had that problem with nVidia (disclaimer: neither did I own a GeForce FX, just a TNT, GeForce 256, and GeForce4). It has, however, been a longstanding complaint with ATI's drivers.

    Edit:
Well, I suppose I will have to admit that part of this is because I avoided the beta drivers that people seemed to have problems with (I always waited a little bit for the consensus on a driver set on the forums). But it was definitely always possible to find an nVidia driver set that worked flawlessly in my games (once the drivers got good....early in the days of the TNT the drivers were quite poor).

whoa... on-the-fly driver selection. install a loader (with VPU Recover, you'd think you could do it on the fly no problem) and then load specific 3D stuff on the fly. crazy.

As a side note, I believe it is pretty easy to switch OpenGL drivers simply by placing the appropriate .dll file in the game's directory from the desired driver set. You may also have to place the OpenGL32.dll file there (from the windows\system or windows\system32 directory).

nVidia could have a field day with that idea... They could have their own Office Assistant-esque character...

"It looks like you're running a benchmark. Would you like to:

    - Cheat on the benchmark?
    - Run the benchmark properly?"

I think that would be too obvious. Same benchmark results for with/without cheating is suspicious. I'd recommend using overly agressive cheating (e.g. missing polys) for the "cheating" mode, while using hidden cheating for the "properly" mode.

    More like

"It looks like you're running a benchmark. Would you like to:

    - Optimize the code for NVIDIA cards and have the driver automatically remove bugs?
    - Run unmodified, buggy code that was compiled for the competition which may run erroneously and slowly on your hardware, thus not actually reflecting the power of your GeForce card (not recommended)?"
