Yep as with most things like this it's always better to have a choice.

Triple buffering is 3 frames queue. One frame is shown, one is waiting, and one is drawn.
Maybe "lag" comes from the fact that visible frame is 2 frames " behind " what is calculated on input (keyboard, mouse) basis.

Ever played UT competitively? You'll know what mouse lag is, even if it's a few milliseconds.

I wouldn't think tripple buffering is an issue when your playing at 640x480, no af, no AA, and gouraud shading... ;)

pls can you tell me which card are you using ... because i think that i get a smother gameplay and better fps in d3 with the ati cards triple buffering on and vsync off ... as with the nvida cards with vsync on

... can anyone confirm this? or maybe has onyone an ati x800 card an can do a timedemo in d3?

well since TB was found in the reg. I have used it on a 9700pro, 9800xt,9600proAIW, X800pro, and now a X800pe. Its the first setting i set in the OpenGL panel (hey and it stays on now too). The days of mouse lag where a while ago... I found it to be USB issue when it did happen. around the 2.9/3.1 cats? I see no downside to gaming with this option. But i guess if my paychk was the diff of a few milli sec , id be a dumb ass.

a timedemo won't really show what is happeing well as it shows just an advrage and it big problem with vsync without triple buffering is the lows in framerate. to see the issue in a benchmark one should really run a fps log.

I play all my games without Vsync and I've never seen any tearing. Those games include recent games such as Far Cry, Thief 3, DX 2, Doom 3, and Splinter Cell:pT.

sure, some people are lest perceptive than others. it doesn't matter what game it is though, any application will suffer from unless it is vsync'ed.

If you can't see tearing in doom3... try this:

    1. ensure vsync is off in doom3 advanced options.

    2. Go like little over a meter/ 4 feet... like half a second of running away from a door. Make sure to have space to both your left and right.

    3. look at the door.

    4. strafe straight to right and left repeatedly while pressing down the run key. Strafe just enough so that the door disappears from your view and appears again when you come back...

    5. now, did you see anything funny?

    6. put vsync on in advanced options and repeat steps 2-5

    7 any difference?

aww, don't spoil it for him, once you know you can't really go back. i wish i didn't notice the tearing, it would make things that much more simple.

lol this is so true. Its like those black circles in the movies signalling a film splice that I never paid attention to b4 fight club. I see tearing in every game I play, but with id games i match my maxfps and my refresh and make sure I'm pegged at the maxfps (this affects jumping of course in all id games before D3). This seems to help but it could be a placebo.
