Z-compression was implemented in the NV20.

It operates on 4x4 blocks when using a 32 bit Z buffer, or 8x4 blocks when using a 16 bit Z buffer.
If certain conditions are met (the Z values are near linear, and if stencil is present the stencil value is the same for the entire block) it stores the block 1:4 compressed, otherwise stores it uncompressed.
The only exception is Z clear that stores 1:8 compressed blocks.

How come you are so into nVidia stuff and you don't even know which chip has Z-compression?

Surprisingly, I didn't remember that the NV25 introduced Z compression. I guess I really should have.

    Make that NV20.

(It might be strange that I use AT as "proof" but nVidia's homepage no longer seem to contain anything about the GF 3.)

Heh. It's been a very long time since I've read anything about the GeForce3....but I guess it makes more sense this way.
