Yeah, np on that of course.
Also, even though the NV40 looks good IMO, ATI isn't toast yet, vry far from that in fact. We don't enough about the R420 yet to make any kind of definitive judgement.

Don't forget the biggest thing about Loki, he was considered the trickster. ;)

Hey, I'll trade you some kitty loving for an explanation of your cryptic comment!

I dont remember anyone saying or implying Ati was toasted. Also, I dont think we know about nV40 either, or are you implying that you do know?

This thread is full of facts on NV40 (of course, there's plenty of inaccurate info too). The toast comment comes from The Inq suggesting that the NV40 would "own" the R420.

Really? Because I don't see anyone from Nvidia comparing their unannounced hardware with ATi's unannounced hardware, unlike the representatives of some other companies.

Man, why do you people bother to visit The Inquirer? Such a rumormongering site really should not be paid any attention to. There's no reason to believe that anything the Inquirer states is true. They simply post stories in an attempt to get a reaction out of people, so that they can get hits.

Just stop visiting their site. It's better for the world that way.

Why haven't the Inq leaked loads of "information" about R420? If they are just making it all up, they might as well make up stuff about R420 as well as NV40....

Is ATi really managing to hold info that tightly even so close to launch? Or is Nvidia leaking like a sieve (deliberately or not)?

Personally, I see this as the same kind of prerelease hype we always see when Nvidia products are about to get launched, always linked from some behind-the-scenes rumour.

No, I'm sure that nVidia has NOTHING to do with the latest rumors about nV40 going around...

The R420 should support the same. MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 both use the same DCT and MC algorithms with not much changes. DirectX Video Acceleration already supports MPEG-4. And ATI already demonstrated Divx acceleration using pixel shaders.

HW provides pieces of these algorithms (HW assisted DCT, FFT, or Wavelet transform, HW assisted de-interlacing, HW assisted
motion compensation). After that, the host CPU can implement a wide range of compression/decompression algorithms by utilizing these component pieces.

I don't know. Do you? What I do know is that comparing your unannounced product with competitor's is "PR FUD".

    Oh, and

If true that the ENCODE part would be really awesome, I couldn't care less about hardware decoding that is such crap and it seems stupid that anyone cares. I mean who buys an NV40/R420 and has a pentium 166 that cannot decode mpeg2?

Well, if it can do it faster than the CPU, decode would be good as well, since decoding an MPEG2 stream is often part of encoding an MPEG4 one.

For more normal uses, MPEG2 decoding can be helpful for laptop owners, where the hardware decoding will frequently reduce power consumption during DVD playback.

I have a pretty well educated guess. 8)

Well, at least ATi had the balls to officially announce that...we actually haven't had ANY official announcements out of nVidia about their next gen part aside from Jen's recent remarks, right?

Double- right back at ya. :)

So you have the ability to magically track an Inq rumor (one of many) to the source? Good for you.

Rather a stark departure from "we don't comment on unannounced products", no?
