no luck with screenshots. hopefully you can find the 'spawn' out of control area by my directions above.

BTW im playing (picked up unfinished!) hitman blood money...i swear one of the supporting NPC voice actors IS the Gothic3 hero. i will check credits eventually. (on the levels flatline (rehab), and the one after (at least) the guy talking to the wheelchair guy IS the Gothic3 hero voice...nearly certain.

Oh wow, this could be a nice game!
It's hard, in a bad (luck-based) way, and the loading times don't help things much, but oh my it does have a magic appeal. When I stand there on a hill in the starting area, it's simply beautiful. It's beautiful not because it's beautiful, on the contrary, everything's dirty and strained and wounded, but because it feels alive.

    *breathes in*

    Hmmm.

Now I just have to find out how I can stop myself from getting killed by wolves. My current armor doesn't seem to make much of a difference, and i have spent most of learning points on the procurement of expensive stuff (i.e. the skills to gather pelts, claws, reptile skins and for opening significantly locked chests).

The best defense against Wolves is a bow (plus the hunting perks, they're very effective against wildlife), or a good attacking spell and a healthy supply of stamina to run away when they come after you in a pack. Seriously, even a high-level character with the best armor in the game can get ripped a new one by a pack of wild animals in G3. The bets tactic is to use the terrain to your advantage and always use ranged attacks. At least until you're down to only one wolf, then you can switch to melee combat and finish it off (right-click-combos)...

Just got this game, and am loving it.
One thing I did notice, if you have V-Sync turned on, it takes 4 times as long to load.

I'm still waiting for a few really comprehensive patches before diving into this game. Any word if Piranha is still working on updates for G3?

Shortly after the last official patch, PB claimed that the majority of their team was still working on fixing G3, and not yet focused on their next project (most likely an add-on). Going by their statements in the past, there should at least be one more patch, that contains a recompiled worldfile and as many fixes to that as they could do over the past months (requires a huge download, thus they want to make it a one-time patch). I haven't heard anything concreate about an estimated arrival date yet though.

On another note, I finally finished G2:NotR as a fire mage. Really great game! Made me realize just how much I missed the depth of dialogue with other characters, complex and interesting quests and the more linear approach to storytelling in Gothic 3. It truly is a better game in pretty much every way. Though G3 certainly has its strengths too and I'm probably going to give it another go soon, now that I'm done with G2 (for the time being, need to replay the game as a dragon hunter after a break)...

i have a G2NOTR game at the point of boarding the ship with my crew.
and G3 is at the point of finding the 5 artifacts...i have 2 or 3, but kind of wasn't in the mood to find more right now.

I hope (without real hope) that the final patch tightens up G3 to a closer approximation of G2 (controlwise would be a BIG leap IMO)

I haven't played the previous Gothics, but I have been playing Gothic 3 and enjoy it quite a bit so far. It's relatively similar to Oblivion in most respects. The only problems I've seen so far are technical, some annoying, some performance wise.

I'm looking forward to the patch. The most annoying technical glitch so far I've experienced is the extensive loading times. Well, it might not be a glitch, but it certainly isn't in the realm of "reasonable".

Berek, you should REALLY get Gothic2 (w NIght of the Raven expansion). not hard on your rig...and the all around play experience is sublime! (IMO)

    Flashing

    Cheers all,

I've just taken up G3 again, after my long awaited new rig has finally been assembled. With it and the latest patch I must say that performance is really quite all right (it damn well should be with two 8800GTXs).

One thing though, which I must ask if I'm the only one seeing; the global lighting, which makes hills and mountains cast shadows keeps flashing on and off as I run around the world. Hellishly annoying I must say.

I'm running G3 at 1680*1050, all settings maxed out on a rig consisting of:
    ASUS Striker Extreme, C2D e6600, Corsair 9136C5D, 2 x Leadtek 8800GTX in SLI, etc...
Win XP Pro, Latest gfx drivers, and all others for that matter.

If there is a fix for this, it would certainly make my day, my weekend even :)

Thank! Seems I'm not the only one in any case. I'll repost if I find any clue to solving the issue.

Not that I want to do my best to be utterly noobish, but isn't that semi-famous patch for AMD processors?

    yes it is for AMD.

though i'd like to mention i run an fx60 and haven't had the global lightning issue at all.

im running an ATI x1900xtx gpu. (on an SLI motherboard)

maybe it's an nvidia thing? an SLI thing?

thanks for reminding me, i need to get back to this game. i think im 80-90% done.

Hmm, righto then. I was under the impression that the dualcore patch for XP SP2 was generally for all dual core processors, Intel or AMD (though it's obviously very improtant for AMD in particular). Though now I notice it also states "And have Power Management features enabled" on the page for the patch...i'm guessing this is for AMD's Cool-N-Quiet.

It can't hurt to try it...otherwise, did you try forcing the affinity to a single core just to see if it'd help?

    Solution

    Cheers,

Ok. so plenty of investigations later I've found the cause and solved the problem with the flashing global lighting.

Seems that it was SLI related (go figure :) ). Turning SLI mode off made the light stop flashing, but off course made the frame rates drop. So, I turned SLI back on and tried forcing rendering modes. I found that AFR1 produced the best frame rates and no flashing. Great!

JoWood announced that Gothic 3 sold over 500k copies so far. Its apparently also more successful in non-german speaking territories than its predecessors...

still i wish it were a bigger seller. maybe some further patching will spur it again.

@sobek : i don't run cool and quiet on my AMD. maybe that's why i don't have the issue.

I think half a million units is quite respectable for a PC game these days. Considering G3 isn't exactly an über-budget title, G3 should have turned quite a healthy profit. That's good news to me, 'cause it means an add-on and a sequel are just that much more likely. ;)

i played this title the past couple of nights. loving it. glad that i can get a little bored with a title, move on, come back, and enjoy it again... I put down Fable (still haven't finished it, started game in sept) again for a while.

as usual, i thought i was closer to being done than i am. (i had found xardas)...but on my way back to desert from nordmar (didn't remember my way around anymore...since 1/15/06 (last play)) have run into 2 'armies' of orcs (you have to kill like 30 of them)...i thought i had cleared out nordmar. second army i left alone. also ran into loads of goblins and wolves, etc, a couple trolls.

how many things are there to kill in this game?

has anyone made a determination as to learning points giving you some bang once you mastered all the skills (my hunting skill is like 322 now)...i have about 72 learning points. can i become an uber 1 shot/1 kill bowman with like a 1000 hunting skill? or should i now learn some magic and smithy/armory and stuff?

Worth having a look at magic just for the different experience I would think. I don't think there's any advantage to hoarding the lps. If you have damage regen, I think that's about as good as combat skills get. 2-handed didn't do a lot for me.
