Hmm, when I try and extract the archive, either with WinRAR or 7zip, I get 'Unknown Method in *.dll' for each file (* being the DLL name). And nothing gets extracted...

    Bummer.

First of all, there's now an english translation of the christmas interview with KaiRo.

Concerning the files. They're compresses with 7zip. If 7zip can't decompress them for you, you either don't have the latest version, or the downloaded zip is corrupt (try again). Alternatively, there's a rar archive of the original (unflagged, for less than 2GB) files available here.

hupfinsgack explained the installation procedure, thanks.

As for how ClaW of Death modified the files, this is what he said:
Translation: a little tweak that took about 8 hours. the tool I used is called dll-explorer. perhaps somebody else comes up with an idea for additional dll-tuning.

me too. I'll try that other link this evening.

that second link worked. (with the rar instead of an exe...no telling what that exe did...)

And another interview (babelfish translation), this time with several team members. I'm not quite sure what to think of this. Reading some of their opinions and the way they ran out of time on almost every front, it seems like a miracle G3 turned out a decent as it has.

Sounds like the game they envisioned was still easily a year away from completion, but any sort of delay totally out of the question. Although some controversial design decisions were intentional, the overal lack of polish in many gameplay areas is to blame in delays and lack of time. For example the whole story had to be implemented in only the last 4 months, no wonder its lacking! The development of their new technology is apparently to blame for most of the problems, since their timeplan simply did not account for things getting finished late or not working straight away. Even though I'm not a programmer I know that's simply not a realistic approach. There will always be delays and setbacks when developing new technology, so commiting yourself to a timetable that relies on meeting every target and deadline in the proccess seems almost foolish.

The good thing is they seem to recognize their faults and intend to take a few steps back towards the old Gothic games in the add-on (contract for that has not yet been signed, but is almost certain). Their technology has now matured enough, that they can better estimate what is possible and what isn't, so things should hopefully go more smoothly in the future as a result. I certainly hope so...

I'm wondering if it has to do with the language/version of Winrar it was created with, sort of how trying to extract a Japanese-made .RAR on some systems results in missing files or 'corrupt' files, simply because of the language difference, or because it has a Japanese character in it somewhere. If I were really desperate, I might just try installing the proper language pack to see what it does.

Which second link were you referring to? The one for people with more than 2gb of ram?

no just above...Gollum produced a link "here"
    .

anyway im back playing G3...i don't notice much (any) difference in performance, but then, i didn't have much stutter anyway. i still have the stutter sound when i enter towns (gelderns is worst, but other towns have it as reduced volume...almost like the geiger counter sound around some trees in the desert area.

btw is the 'ancester stone' an artefact (1 of 5)...and if i've plugged into the rune thing, did i just screw up getting all the artefacts?

No ancestor stones aren't the artefacts from the main quest...

well plugging the ancestor stone in the rune thingy, didn't do me much good at all anyway (or i haven't figured out what it's about yet).

anyway, i just found it while flubbering my way around nordmar (my usual play style)...kill everything that might mess with me on a mission...even solve some missions before i get them. im usually just wondering around adventuring on my own volition...the story gets in the way slightly, but so far things tend to fall into place nicely sooner or later (just like in G2)

Yes, I did that for the first 100 hours or so :)

I also turned off the focus names... Nordmar in the fog with no signposts.. you can imagine how much fun that was...

Amusingly, because I'd turned the labels off everything, I never noticed the teleporter stone in Ardea, so I never knew these things existed, never looked for them and spent the first half of the game running everywhere. It was great :)

(Rode everywhere in Oblivion as well :)

I also like to do that, especially early on, while still getting to know and exploring the world. I only start using teleportation (or instant travel) late in the game, when I've already travaled the lands extensively. It's kinda cool to look on your map where you have or want to go next and plan a good route.

The ancestor stones belong to a quest you get from the leader of the fire clan. SPOILER: There are 5 ancestoral tombs scattered around nordmar. Each ancestor is a legnedary hero of some sort, like a smith, hunter or warrior. By placing the corresponding ancestoral stone nack in the tomb, you can gain a part of thieir former knowlede (like +5 strength, or +8 blacksmithing or something like that). Basically big, questbound power-ups. ;)

and i have only one of them (thanks for the tip). guess i have a lot of work left to do in nordmar...still playing the same game i started in oct...now level 60.

i' ve only just now been able to purchase medium level armor.

and i've started spending some of my backlog of LP on smithing and stuff (still have 70 LPs left)

i've just found hammer clan hideout...found wolf town night before last. didn't realize the huge cave i accidently cleaned out several weeks ago (pre xmas) was next door to hammer town. is that the fire clan area? nobody wants to talk to me there. just got a quest to go find about 4 smiths to get approval for some smithy skill i can't remember.

    i found xardas (by accident)...

and to top it all off, i found a small baggy (size of grape) of weed in front of the public library (sidewalk) yesterday (in real life)...not like you can take it to the 'lost and found'!...probably a trap!

*waits for door to burst open...followed by hail of bullets*

Congrats on Xardas - you'll never be able to find him again ;)

I might fire it back up soon and clean out a cave or two (I'm thinking of a particular one near to the bandits who are harassing one of the Montera farms).

Strangely when the game ends you are kicked right out. There's no Oblivion style 'afterlife' after the end of the main quest.

really? that is harsh! can't even do a victory lap? (between missions, if im in the mood (usually yes) i like to just run around in my 'conquered' areas...enjoying sights i might not have appreciated fully (look up at sky, look over, jump off waterfall) while having a purpose in that area.

i liked doing that in GTA's too. free roam rocks that way!

do you have a general idea when you are about to hit the point of no return? (gonna end on ya)

Yes, it's on returning to the final quest giver... I think the other Gothics did the same thing.

    yeah i knew G2 did, i still haven't finished G1.

on to other things. Is this fixable? to reduce system load...

i managed to climb up on a mountainous area (cliffs across from ranger camp down the path from dominick's shack close to montera orc town) where animals (fighting) practically drip from the cliff and fall into that valley (as long as i've been playing the game). my game gets really laggy when i try to harvest the corpses and kill the survivors close to those cliffs...then speeds up when i get back to the path beside the ranger camp.

anyway got up there (from the other side of it...rebel camp outside of montera orc town)....horrible visibility, many dangerous creatures (fighting blind sometimes due to bushes). anyway i stumbled on a cache of dead and living creatures...i mean hundreds! in a pile! (collected 55 cudgels ALONE), couple dozen of those flies. dark snappers, jackels (desert only?), snappers, lizards, lurkers, boars, ripperbeasts, rhinos...most DEAD already. not all.

is this like a broken spawning point?...the cradle of all spawns? (desert creatures here too)...would turning this off help with system load? i mean with all those corpses (and the fact i hear them from the ranger camp, fighting whenever i pass by (remember lag here). are they being constantly spawned even when im not around?

i see no point for it. inaccessable/remote...no loot to be had (other than organs and skins, etc)...no mission for it right? i wonder how hard it would be to turn this 'fountain' off.

i plan to go back up tonight and see if they're still spawning.

I never noticed that point. Could you take a few screens when you go back there and post them?

Never saw this either. If you post pics of the location, I'll check :) (Who was Domenick?)

dominick is the guy (with 1 slave) you meet on the way from ardea to montera, before you get to the bandit camp and the cave with the wolves (mission) before arriving at montera. you cross a bridge over a stream and there's his cabin/shack. if you go left on the path, you go by the (top) of the giant waterfall you can see from the desert area (and you can jump off it...fall forever...no damage)...keep following that path you get to the ranger's camp...with the druid guy in the cave...

if at dominick's you take the right path you next hit a bandit camp, then the cave full of wolves that kill livestock of montera.

above that cave is also access to same area.

i hit f12...and game IMMEDIATELY crashed to desktop lastnight (i tried screenshot)...isn't that screenshot key?

i'll try getting screenies...it's such a pain to do that and post...but it's friday night! so once i finish playing perhaps i can post.

what's the best pic upload freebie site these days? photobucket?

BTW an autumn mod for G3 is available!
    http://forum.worldofplayers.de/forum/showthread.php?t=186521

    im gonna get it.

Urk. I fired this back up, forgetting that I'd forced on AA to try and play The Longest Journey, which completely shafts G3... and I can't seem to persuade it to turn off. Hmm.

Good find CC! The screens look very cool, definitely gives the game a Gothic 1 like look. I think they removed a bit too much green from the ground, but otherwise it looks good!

I never got the internal Gothic 3 screenshot feature to work. I use FRAPS or Taksi to take screens.

I think I know what area you're reffering to now. I'll try and check it out later!
