I have just seen that a BETA 1.09 patch is now available from update.gothic3.com that supposedly addresses the save game bug. According to the WoG and JoWood forums it only solves the save game bug and may cause crashes when loading. So unless you're really desperate, I would advise to wait for the final patch.

I have taken a break from doing quests (been to all but four cities, but never saw a nomad campment and a lot of other stuff, and did about 25% of all the quests). I've been playing for about 80 hours so far (way too much, really, but it's great and I haven't played much games for the last half year), traveled about half the main roads, but that still leaves a vast unexplored area. So now I'm just exploring. Walking around, seeing stuff. There are so many interesting people and places everywhere, in the middle of nowhere, and it's often breathtakingly gorgeous. Like the valley south of Silden, or to the north-east.

I'm pretty sure it would take you at least sonething like 200 hours to finish it without spoilers. Time well spend, I'd say.

    ;)

How much of those 200 hours would I have spent reloading saves after ridiculous deaths or restarting the game from crashes? Probably over 50%.

    Ridiculous deaths?

Hmmm... I'd say "learn to play" or "learn to role play" to that one ;)

Some enemies require long range weapons like bows and spells, some require long weapons like the halberd and some are best dealt with the good old sword (or double sword) play etc..

That's one way of looking at it.

Another would be, that the game is very compelling, especially because it's not a cake walk where you waltz in with your sword drawn everywhere, kill all and have all the quest directions presented to you painlessly.

And the game crashes are completely avoidable. I only have them when I think: "well, I've played about two hours so far and things become choppy so I need to restart, but I want to explore that next cave / resolve that next quest / kill that irritating nest of nasties / whatever, first".

There's a difference between difficult combat and completely inconsistant combat. It's already been argued in this thread enough so I won't dwell over it.

Nice that the patch is helping the save problem. And I have been saving often and can sometimes see when i might be crashing soon. The problem is that just quitting the game seems to take about 2 minutes of dumping the swap file, then another 5 minutes at least to get into the game and load a savegame again. Yes I don't have a super fast HDD setup, but it is a SATA-150 so not exactly bottom end.

I'm really starting to enjoy it now for the simple fact that I went an upgraded from 1Gb to 2Gb RAM purely for this game as it was so compelling and addictive like you stated. It made a world of difference for loading, saving and quitting the game and general playability as well. But I will still whine and rant about it as I shouldn't have to do that upgrade just to have a remotely playable game.

For people who think combat is too hard, I have two tips:

    1. Use the terrain to your advantage.
    2. If things go wrong: RUN AWAY!

Btw, I know the above is hard to get used to for MMORPG and MO players, as they're thought that doing things like that can get you banned. They know they should die and respawn like "a real Man!".

    3. Put learning points into hunting, get a decent bow and combine with 1. and 2. and you can kill anything without even getting hurt (if you are careful and so wish).

I've done a lot of running to new areas, saving & quicksaving, and a bit of teleporting, and seen no crashes :) The new patch seems to have helped :-D

Well put! Although enough people I respect have spoken up for this game to know I'll enjoy it when it's fixed, it is so not our responsibility to upgrade our machines so the game will even run somewhat acceptably... I've upgraded for plenty of games before, but at least they worked before I upgraded! Hell, I played Oblivion for two weeks on an ATi IGP!!

sorry, i feel like I'm beating a dead horse, but I had to just say, I agree, without even knowing, the game is probably great, if you guys will suffer through all that (on my machine it's about 5 solid minutes to load or unload, so saves and crashes are both abominable). But kudos to some for bitching about what needs to be bitched about. Can't wait till this one gets fixed -- let me know how the new patch treats you, I may hop back in if it works!

One of the most rewarding aspects of this game is, that you actually notice how you're getting better. The first 20 levels or so were tough. But now, at level 45, I'm wandering through the wilderness with a much more secure feeling, because I can deal and take a lot more punishment! That's a feeling Oblivion could never really give me, even at level 37 or so you could still get smacked silly by s tupid bear or some super-goblin from outer space...

yeah i like getting to that point (im around level 35 now...day 43) where you can walk backwards and kill anything that's coming for you before it gets to you...boars, wolves ("wheen!"), snappers, trolls.

my fire lizards have yet to breath fire.

careful buying 'make poisions skill' in lago and neighboring desert area ("santo's? mine"). it will take your money, NOT your LP, and you DO NOT get the skill. not sure what the problem is. but i wasted about $7500 bucks! and lived with it. i wanna make poision arrows.

anyone know if the save bug causes egregious load crashes?

i quit last night after getting killed while not bothering to save (again) for a couple of hours of play. DOH!
