I would typically ask "Are you fucking kidding me?" but I know this is Nintendo so I know it's no joke and is instead Nintendo's failure showing through.

Well, for multiplayer gaming on the go, something like this is actually necessary. Now, if this is the only option even when in a home environment - sure, in that setting this would be pretty clunky.

Vita has multiplayer on the go with voice chat and no need for a mobile phone, so no, it isn't. ;)

You need access to the cellular network over the phone. Thus you need to hook up to the phone somehow. The most straightforward way to do that is to do it physically. (Depending on country and service provider/plan, allowing other devices/users to connect to the internet via the phone can be restricted. This, though clunky, will always work.)

If the Switch is using the phone's cellular network for multiplayer, it can use it for voice chat and pipe the audio through the Switch. But is it? I thought network gaming on Switch was Wifi only.

    Well......that is.....why? Because......Nintendo. LOL

Still, why isn't the phones connection to the headphones done through Bluetooth? Seems like Hori over complicated an already complicated scenario for voice chat.

    I thought a bit more.
While the internet is jumping to premature conclusions, there really are oddities here.
I've been assuming that this is due to the picture simply being incomplete, because I could add the missing pieces looking forward. But Nintendo really should be open about what their online plans are. They don't necessarily need to commit to a schedule or make firm promises, but without some sort of statement of intent, they just create insecurity among their customers (and invite internet drama).

I suspect E3 will divulge a lot of the information on the mobile app.

Like what? It shows a licensed headset that combines two wired 3.5 mm jacks into one connector for a headset. That fits exactly what Nintendo have thus described about their system. This is just a solution that allows both Switch and mobile audios to be heard on the same headset, instead of having a headset for chat and having to listen to Switch on speakers through them.

Sure, and it does the job, and you don't have extra wireless pairing and connection issues. But wireless options would be nice, and I can't really see why this should be the only way for people connected on wifi. Can parental control via the app really mandate going via the smartphone at all times? Can't really see why parental control couldn't be mirroed to the console.

That would require the Headset to run dual-Bluetooth connections, right? I haven't seen any multi-Bluetooth devices. The closest I've seen are the multi-device keyboards which can switch between multiple devices but it's only ever working with 1 device at a time.

As to why parental control can't be mirrored to the console, the answer is "because Nintendo". They just don't have a clue when it comes to the software architecture and infrastructure.

Didn´t they partner with DeNA for the online infraestructure and mobile content?

  17. Nintendo was too greedy to buy microphones for the switch. They thought forcing their customers to power up their smartphones to enable multiplayer voice chat would be a good idea.

I think their decision has everything to do with not wanting to reserve any hardware or software resources for something that a majority of their audience's may never use. Those resources are better spent on the game. Every little bit counts. But for those that do want it they've offered a means by having an external device provide the functionality instead.

Seems logical from Nintendo's point of view even it's go against how it's been done by everybody else.

Isn't this is because the infrastructure for "social" and "game" was made by different company?

I think the old EA proposal is much better than than this DENA proposal.

Or maybe this is why DENA can get the contract with Nintendo! Because they back down from the "game" infrastructure.

If I remember correctly, the fallout between Nintendo and EA, one of the reasons are because EA want everything on their infrastructure / origin.

how much resources does it take to plug a microphone headset directly onto the controller like what the 360/PS4/XBX One does?
Multiplayer gaming has become a standard. It is one of the priorities
How did it work on Wii and Wii U btw?
