Better make sure that all these NFC phones have IP68 (or higher) waterproofing then!

If you need to reach into the bowl to pull out your phone and then rinse it off in the sink, it will surely be a learning experience which will ensure that you don't drop it again!

ROFL ok.... I hate shirts with pockets and I flush standing up. I know how the content smells or looks like, so no need to get better acquainted with it by leaning over...what an interesting conversation indeed....

Well my ATM card was hacked and used to withdraw over $300 in Milan.

There were attempts to withdraw more but the card was shut down.

Unfortunately, VISA isn't requiring the liability shift to push for EMV debit cards as quickly as it is for EMV credit cards. The deadline is October 2017 and that may only be for the US, not necessarily for international.

All my debit cards are Visa. But looks like I'll have to carry mag strip cards for a couple more years. Hope is that all forms of mobile payments, not just Apple Pay but Google wallet as well, push through EMV debit card adoption much sooner than later.

Apple Pay is okay because of the fingerprint, but I think NFC on it's own is just stupid for payment ... broken by design and widely adopted before it could be fixed. There is no good justification for it's vulnerability to MITM/relay attacks ... they should have had sub-ns time of flight localization tests in the protocol to guarantee NFC is actually near.

I don't want to need to have my debit/credit card in a metal wallet just to be safe from stupid design choices.

    They are orthogonal technologies.

If we follow Cook's presentation, ApplePay can also be used for online payment, which doesn't require NFC at all.

It should be possible to use the ApplePay payment framework for other form of payment. We should know more when they release the SDK in October. IMHO, in some use cases, users should not need to queue up and pay at an NFC terminal at all. It's archaic.

Apple Pay is part of the PassKit. Most apps will work with a payment processor (such as Stripe) to use Apple Pay. For example, suppose that you already have an app selling something using Stripe, you can add Apple Pay as a payment tool (instead of a credit card), which will give you a single use token after the user authenticated with Touch ID. The remaining part is basically the same as usual. Using Apple Pay this way does not involve the NFC component.
