Isn't Microsoft offering the 3-year warranty for E74, though? It'd be odd if they changed the way errors are reported to avoid paying the warranty, only to then pay the warranty anyway.

I don't think anybody has ever said Microsoft has changed the error to get out of the 3yr warranty for RROD. People were thinking maybe they were doing to get rid of the stigma. But yes, E74 is now covered on the same warranty.

When checking a table with the install sizes of different games (I was looking for the maximum install size), I noticed that the minimum install size is 3.4 GB, although very many games do have this size. Anyone got an idea why no game occupies less space? My guess is that there must be some mandatory files on the DVD that aren't stripped out during the install.

Wild stab in the dark*: that sounds like the size of a single layer dvd.

True, it's half of the maximum capacity (6.8 GB). But why would you not strip out unneeded data? It's not as if all games are either 3.4GB or 6.8GB. So there must be a reason for it.

It's just an ISO clone of the DVD isn't it?

Yeah, making an image is a lot less complicated then trying to copy only the data needed. You'd have to profile every single game and set up redirects for duplicate data that has been moved. Not really worth the headache.

I know it is some form of ISO image (albeit without the copy protection data, hence just 6.8GB max). But why does the ISO have a minimum size of 3.4GB? I mean, some games must be smaller than that.. Conversely, if it were an ISO of the whole DVD, then one-layered games would all be 3.4GB, and double-layer games would all be 6.8GB. But this is not the case, as all image files range between 3.4GB-6.8GB, and NOT betweem 0GB-6.8GB. Hope this makes my question a bit more clear. :)

I understand why they make an image. My question is: why does the image size range from 3.4GB to 6.8GB, and not from 0GB-6.8GB? :)
(there are many games with this 3.4GB minimum size, so it seems to be no coincidence)

It could be as simple as some quirk of the copy protection scheme.

Oh, right. My guess is with Brad, that it's some copy protection thing and the whole 3.4 GBs of the first game layer is involved with protection, whereas other data can be copied file-wise. That's the only reasonable explanation I can think of.

    1 vs 100 Preview

Here's a preview of how 1 vs 100 will work. It sounds fun. You can win either a Live Arcade game or anywhere between 200 and 10,000 Microsoft Points. Or $2.50 and $125 in US. You start out in the crowd answering questions, then you can move up to the mob and finally up to the "One". It can all be done in one evening while playing with up to 3 other players locally on the same machine. And yes, it's already announced it's free for Gold members. Can't wait!
