I loved Morrowind and Oblivion is without-a-doubt the #1 game I'm looking forward to.

I was a big fan of the Ultima games (clear back to Alkalabeth, Ultima I & II on my Apple ][+) and it seems like these games are logically where that franchise could have been if it continued--at least in terms of fun.

    Later,
    Steve

According to the Elder Scrolls web sight those are XBOX 360 screen shots. I wonder how smoothly that game will play on the XBOX 360.

I loved morrowind simply because it was big and looked nice. I felt like I was exploring. I tried gothic2, but I didn't get far enough to get a viewpoint. Anyway I do agree that morrowing suffered from terrible animation, and bad dialogue. But to me the environment is one of the most important aspects so I was ok with crappy npcs.

I thought morrowind was gonna be awesome, but I was bored out of my mind.
NWN Oc was the same way, but the expansions fixed the boredom, the morrowind expansions were still boring to me.
But I'll give Oblivion a look.

I just don't get HDR. A heavy performance penalty for an out-of-focus soft porn look? I hope it goes out of fashion soon.

Kinda reminds me of the time when the first Unreal came out and each and every game suddenly had to have lens flares and halos. I think "out-of-focus soft porn look" really hits the spot!
Anyway, I tried Morrowind, but I never got hooked. Gothic 2 simply was so much better. But I might try Oblivion if reviews are good, the graphics look really nice (apart from the overblooming).

    yap, agreed.
last summer i was playing like whole day for 3 weeks.... i always liked games where you can do something on your own... in Morrorwind i had a fetish to collect all kinds of items and store them in my house....

just remembering all the armor, weapons, portions, scrolls and stuff i managed to collect there makes me smile....

Unreal was colorful (finally!) and had fancy things like coronas around lights. They also were overly excited by their goofy animate water texture process. I don't remember lense flares. I think that was bigger a year or so earlier. Heh they must have had them though. Lense flares are stupid since you'd have to have a camera for a head to see them.. :)

On Oblivion, I think it's amazing that people can be so spread out in gaming interests. Morrowind was all about adventuring around on your own and exploring, and discovering things. It wasn't about rigid plotlines. Obviously they couldn't put the same warm and fuzzy comforter over the game with it being so hugely open.

Like has been said by others, I agree that the most exciting thing about Oblivion for me is that it is the next iteration in Bethesda's massively SINGLE player RPG. They've been refining these games for almost 20 years now. That's amazing to me.

You're describing Bloom Lighting, HDR is not necessary for a Bloom Lighting effect.

And Yes, I agree that the effect is overused these days.

Closer to 10 years. Arena came out in spring of '94. And god was it a buggy f'n game. I remember getting the patch for it on a floppy disk directly from Bethesda after registering the game and calling their tech. support complaining about the bugs.

Damn fun game, though. I still remember all the sprite-based NPCs in city streets, the weather effects, day and night cycles, the sprawling dungeons, etc.

Although I suspect that you already know that, but Bethesda have Arena freely downloadable at their site.

You need Dosbox (or a partition with Win3.11), if you want to experience Arena's bugs once again.

    The videos look much better

    http://media.pc.ign.com/media/702/702491/vids_1.html

Hdr looks so much better in motion than in screen shots . At least based on my experiance with farcry screen shots and then playing it .

I also don't believe hdr can be over used. Only set to bright . Hdr should be applied to every light source but only at a low value

You need to be Insider to get the "High def" version of the trailer. And since we must have quite a few IGN "outsiders" on the forum, here's the official links to the trailer:

Well, there's an easy trick to get around the need to be an "insider".

    Gah.
Bending armor. Why do they have to animate platemail as if it was a tight rubber shirt?
Just look at the chests of the dudes with breatplates when they're bending or stretching the torso. Gah.

(but I can live with flaws like that, hell, I lived with all the bugs in Daggerfall and Morrowind without complaining :))

Trailer looks amazing! Perhaps the HDR effect is a little over-used, but it's hard to tell without seeing it in person. The only thing that worries me a bit is that the world looks a bit more 'generic RPG' than Morrowind, which was quite inventive.

Heh, you realize how hard it'd be to render full plate a set of rigid, interlocking pieces? This would be tremendously difficult to do with any significant variety in body sizes and types. Give it a few years.
