for me the most immersive games are thief and system shock series.

well far cry has nice graphics and nice ai but its replayability is zero for me because of the lack of immersion and good storyline.to be honest the far cry level design is not that great and the story line sucks.

maybe half-life 2 will not have the best gfx when its finally released, but im sure it will be superior game to far cry / doom 3 when it comes to gameplay, storyline, leveldesign.

    Some low-quality game footage...
    ...of CS2.
    And HL1... with Source.

    http://www.hardwired.hu/dl.hw?id=2275&dl=1

( At least that's what it's supposed to be, haven't seen yet. Got some HL2-haters drooling, fans had seizures, so it should be GOOD. )

EDIT : OK, apparently very little CS2 and no souped-up HL1 in this one... here are some screenies of the later though if you haven't seen 'em already ( spiffy water + ragdoll + original textures / models = wadda... ).

Doesn't matter- it's just as good. Now, CS will actually look playable...

I dunno too early to really tell but I think the graphics look great...reason being = Alot of games like Unreal2 and Far Cry have a real cartoony feel too them. The colurs are simply too bright or too colourful...Maybe my eyesights fading with age but the representations of City 17(I think) actually look realistic - with drab ghetto style textures on crumbling aged architecture. How many coats of new paint would you expect theses areas to recieve?? There is some bright areas that I have seen -like the bink movie released with the tunnel scene and the Trooper dude being impaled then slammed onto the ground. Not this scene particulary but the movie itself.

As other people - have said it's all down the the game play really and I haven't seen enough of this yet to really tell.

and yeh I hope we don't see an outbreak of consolitis either :(

HL2 felt overall more realistic than anything else out there. Especially compared to Halo 2... they made it cartoony, argh!

That Half Life2 trailer which has the couple of minutes of update counter strike footage at the end of it looks fantastic. I think it's the footage from ATI's booth at E3.

I quite liked the bit where gordon uses the manipulator to pick up the rusty saw blades in that tool shed place, and then launches it at one of the zombies, splitting it in two. The weird starship trooper like aliens have got these weird wings attached to them and they seem to have a new attack, a leap attack of some sort? Looks like they've done some work on it since last E3. The strider also looks to have a new attack, weird blue laser thing. The whole fighting with the strider scene was quite good. Favourite bit has to be where he picks up the grenade, that a combine soldier threw at him, with the manipulator and then chucked it straight back

I'm currently downloading the whole shebang from Fileplanet, clocks in at 700MB and is basically the trailer from VUs and ATIs booth put together.
Got 14 hours or so left yet

Wise policy there... in fact, I plan to unplug The Cable (TM) until I've finished them.
Don't know if I'll be able to pull it through though... :)

    maybe...

I've also seen the screens for HL2 and CS2, and I can think of a good and bad thing.

The good thing, it looks like HL2 might have that same feel and gameplay that made it great 5 years ago. As well, since CS2 is almost ported exactly, it will appeal to the 70,000 daily CS players (steam-stats), and will gameplay wise, will be unchanged.

But that's the problem, or it could be a problem, it looks like a port and nothing else, no changes to gameplay and such. As well, the graphics by the time it comes out, go even be outdated (!!! Like this doesn't happen), and might have to rely on game experience rather than visuals.

Still, no-one (except Valve) will know exactly what the game will be like.

Remember, it's not CS2, it's CS Source. It's the same CS maps with better graphics. That was the intent from the beginning.

Wow HL2 has an amazing atmosphere! Just the little things like the people talking to you or with each other or the guy on the TV talking (1984 anyone?) and many more things. Graphics didn't look too spectecular (FC really stole the WOW momentum from HL2) from a technical side of things but artistically it fits the mood very well! I think it will rock :)

yeah no details are really known about CS2. The only thing valve have shown is CS: Source, basically CS ported to the source engine. So the gameplay's exactly the same, just now the graphics are spruced up and there's a physics system in place. Valve will be porting all the old games(i.e. HL, Opposing Force, Blue Shift) to source. From what I've heard you'll have to buy them for a nominal fee or something like that.

After I have seen the new E3 Trailer (the 700 meg vid from Fileplanet) I personally believe that HL2 will mop the floor with Far Cry and Doom 3.
The atmosphere seems to be really great, the action is great, the manipulator looks like fun and I really like those striders :)

I dunno. After seeing Far Cry and seeing Painkiller, I think Painkiller just blows Far Cry out the water. Graphically and performance wise. I pimp out Painkiller and it runs fantastically. I pimp out Far Cry and it's chugging. I look at the graphics and I wonder why the hell it's doing so. They don't seem that amazing to me.

But alas to each his own. :)

how can you wonder? a primarily dx8 game with shooting gallery gameplay is by nature going to be easier on the hardware than a game like far cry or hl2.

I must admit that I wasn't as wowed by Far Cry as some others have but then again I haven't played through the entire game just yet. Another thing...I won't cast judgement on Doom 3 until (if) we get a full blown trailer like the 700MB HL2 monster.

I have a question: Why are the stryders called stryders? Is that just a name invented by Valve or is that a common expression for 3 legged metal things in the english language? :D

I remember a kinda obscure 80s show which had very large 3 legged metal things just about looking like the stryders. I think it was about a cult worshipping them or sth. i don't really remember anymore. Does that have anything to do with it?

it is a play on the words "stride" and "spider", with a "y" for style i guess.
