Hi everybody - long time, no reply!

So, what about the loading screen annoyance in Morrowind? Is it finally fixed ATI?

The problem: Each time you enter a new 'cell' outdoor (or indoor) in Morrowind some loading of data is taking place and with Cat 3.4, Cat 3.5 and Cat 3.6 the whole screen will be filled with a full screen random colour.

Prior to Cat 3.4 the ingame screen is just 'frozen' as the data is loaded. This bug is annoying because it ruins a lot of the feeling of being present in the game when a random fullscreen colour greets you all the time while walking around. :(

    Doesn't happen with Cat 3.2 and 4xFSAA + 8xAF, so I'm still using that.

Regarding triple-buffering and AA. This reminds of something I brought up to Epic and ATI about a year back.

Try benchmarking UT2003's Slaughterhouse Botmatch (bundled with the game) at 6xAA and 4xAA, with and without triple buffering. IIRC, with triple-buffering on, 6xAA is slower than 4xAA while without triple-buffering 6xAA is faster than 4xAA. Try all with and without VSYNC.

Many times, triple-buffering's effect is affected by D3D resource/memory allocation by a particular app and/or one of its levels.

Unfortunately for me I changed my 9700 for a 9800 Pro & the accursed loading screen problem occurs even with the Cat 3.2s on my new card.

The 3.6 full packaged XP drivers were 15MB.

The 3.7 full packed are 22MB.

The 3.8 full packed would be between 30-50MB.

I'm very pleased that there's an option to force TB on, I have Vsync On as I don't like the tearing effect which I find quite noticable when straffing left/ right in fps games.
Here's an example using RTCW ET (My Monitor is set at 85Hz).
    TB OFF
    www.jlmay.f2s.com/ET DB.JPG
    TB ON
    www.jlmay.f2s.com/ET TB on Cat 37.jpg

With TB off my fps was constantly jumping from 85/42/85 all the time and it was never perfectly smooth but with TB on it's 85/84/85 and smooth as silk.

Hey, what about user control of trilinear application to texture stages, or information on this issue? This is something well suited to the compatibility setting page for a "All stage/first stage" toggle, at the very least. :-?

Perhaps you're focused on a different implementation, maybe as part as 3.8? But users don't know the answer to that, and haven't for a while...

What was the "two big additions" thing for prior drivers, anyways? That was from months ago.

ooh i didnt realise that didn't happen before cat3.4

Its something to do with the FSAA, the colour also isn't random, its the colour of the fog at the time (hence when outside its yellowish in the morning going through white to red then to black)

Jep, the fog (colour) seems to relate to the issue somehow. If only there was a quick fix beyond either staying with Cat 3.2 or not using FSAA at all (heaven forbid!).

If you did the ini tweak to remove the on the fly loading take it off as that should reduce this happening when walking around to a minimum. I only get it when going between interiors/exterior but not just when walking around.

Hmm.. still no mention of 9800SE in these drivers.. Oh well, there's always a "manual" way..

But there seems to be rv360 in it.. radeon 9600 series..
    but no r360..

So, how frewuently did catalysts come? ;)

I've mentioned this elsewhere so I'll mention it here too: This is really an application issue. I won't go into details but I asked our devrel folks to bring it up with the developer, but I don't know what the outcome will be.

I got almost the exact same score in flyby, but a 6fps boost in botmatch. WIth 4xAA/16xAF.

The control panel seems to be really messed up in the separate downloads. Something is really 'broken'. The large 24 mb download is fine though.

Strangest thing though. The control panel files are identical. But the drivers themselves are different. The 24 mb kit has larger inf files.

And the 24 mb download is numbered: 030812a1-010735c
while the drivers for the separate download are: 030812a1-010736c
However, the control panal for the seprate download is the same as the 24 mb download, being: 030812a1-010735c

What is the difference? Well, the diff of the CX_10736.INF from the the separate download and CX_10735.inf from the combined download shows lots and lots of difference.

Just pasting a portion of the diff here:

From that, it sould seem the 10736 inf (separate download), seems to be out of date.

My conclusion, someone screwed up. They are not the same drivers.

there was a wrong link on ati's driver site yesterday. The seperate driver was linked to the multi language version instead of the english, german, french version only which caused problems(missing option and tabs in the CP) when used with the control panel intended for the english, german, french driver version. The link is now fixed , so if you have problems with missing option in the CP , redownload the drivers and install it again.
