New car, G37 convertible?

My wife is planning on getting a new car soon, and she let me know she has her heart set on a 2010 Infinity G37 convertible. (6mt sport model, loaded) Whilst I'm not necessarily against this, it does seem like a good chunk of change to drop on transportation to me....'specially considering the car is rear wheel drive only so she wants to also pick up a used Jeep to use in winter.

Total cost we're looking at is somewhere 'tween $60-65k for the G37 & Jeep, anyone recommend any other vehicles I should look at?

She's looking for something fun, nice, and preferably a hard top convertible... :???:

Not that it is the determining factor in all cases Waste, but his wife brings home the bacon as I understand and hence just saying NO might not be the way to go.

I think myself it is madness, but it doesn't really matter. If I wasn't going for a super efficient vehicle I would probably always want AWD myself.

Can you get Alfa's over in the US? the Brera looks really nice I think.

As said above the Z4 might be a option. I would never get a boxter because you'll look like someone who wanted a real sports car but couldnt aford one. I always thought the SLK is just plain ugly and once you get down at the Mazda's and VW's your not talking about a nice car anymore but just what gets you the most bang for you buck. Which is fine too but you cant really compare it with the Z4 level cars.

Personally I would never buy anything Japanese. I love Japan but god I hate their cars. Why do they all have to look so ugly and emotionless? If you're gonna charge someone 60k+ for a car you'd think they would try to atleast style it in such a way that it wouldnt hurt your eyes.

Hey dig. I'm loving the 370z Roadster which shares the underpinnings of the G37. I would have considered the G37 except two seats was a requirement (this is a mom and dad no kids car). I'm actually considering the G37s for my next company car as it has AWD, but I'll likely stick with an SUV for space.

When it comes to convertibles with performance *and* four seats there aren't many options. G37, Mustang, Lexus ISC 10...and - next year - the Camaro SS.

Of those the G37 is my favorite with the stang a distant second. If it were out the 2012 Camaro 2SS convertible would leap to #1.

As for a winter car as a backup, jeeps are okay, but aren't most 4x4 and not awd? I'd go for something with AWD unless you're looking to do serious off roading. I used Subaru would do nicely.

Have you thought about the word NO. Not a good time to buy large items at this time with the threat of getting laid off.
I'm working on that one Snipe, but I usually fail. Last time we got a car I was trying for a cheapy, that's when we got the BMW. (In fairness that was a pretty cheapy and a great deal)

This time she's planning on taking out a home equity loan to kill off the rest of our CC debt, rebuild the foundation on our house, and to put a down payment on a new car. Something about the interest being tax deductible and us getting nailed HARD this year at tax time. I don't do the finances in my family, that's the wife's department...I just try and back her up.

I'm not worried about a layoff, my wife's job is pretty secure and believe it or not she's still getting job offers from other places....pharmacists are still in pretty high demand and good ones doubly so, my wife is a VERY good one. ;)

I do agree with you though, and I will try and interject sanity into the discussion. When we're JUST getting out of debt after too many years in the red is not the best time to go on a buying spree, imho.

That being said, the G37 is just a drop-dead gorgeous fucking piece of automotive pornography. I've been trying to find as sweet a car/deal and just can't.

When you do this kind of thing you're exchanging unsecured debt (credit cards) and car-secured debt for secured debt. Today if you default on credit cards they can't take your house...afterwards your debt is now secured by your house which is not good. Very American, but not good.

Car loans are dirt cheap right now too. 3.5% for 5-6 years without any incentives.

Nope. No Alfa's here :(

Wasnt alfa working on setting up a dealship network for some time already? Atleast now that Fiat is so close with crysler and everything maybe that will speed up the process.

As far as im concerned Alfa is pretty much the only car company in the world (not counting cars that cost as much as a house) that makes cars that can truly be called beautifull. Everything from germany looks too corporate. Not ugly, but it wont give you a warm feeling. Japanese cars dont have design (I'm sorry, but I think the G37 is ugly). Citroen has some interresting designs. not sure if they are good looking but atleast its not more of the same. But citroen doesnt sell cars in the US either I think.

alfa's has gorgeous cars, but I haven't seen a new one in the state since the eighties.
I drool over them when I'm in Europe.

Can't get Alfas here, nor Lotus. :(

BMW Z4
Porsche Boxter
Mercedes Benz SLK
Mazda Miata
VW Eos
Volvo C70

No hardtop:
Corvette
Audi A5 (awd)
Did I mention it has to be a four-seater? We had a 2004 350Z we loved, but with kids a backseat is necessary. (Doesn't have to be a good one though, they're small... ;) )

I'm expanding my options now to include anything that is nice under $55k if it's allwheel or $60-ish rear wheel.

Actually, if you're going to spend that much, take a look at the Audi S5 Cabriolet...AWD, 330 bhp, 0-60 in 5.1 seconds, drop dead gorgeous and fit and finish well above the G37 series...

Oh, well that narrows things down considerably:

BMW 3 series convertible
Lexus IS C (better looks, no manual for the 350)

I was looking hard at that one last night before reading your post actually. On paper it looks better, ('cept no cooled seats), but my wife isn't quite partial to it.

I think I'll take her to look at it in person. That and the Volvo 80 which totally loaded is in our price range too. (Not a convertible, but it has dual DVD players in the backseat for the kids...big plus!)

Once you drive an S5 you'll notice a big difference between it and the G37. I love my 370z, but it's no Audi supercharged six in there...and no quattro
