They still haven't contacted the beta test "winners". At this point I'm wondering just how useful a beta test can be considering the ship date is supposed to be in october - 3 weeks after gold. What could they really change in so short of a time?

My Oblivion collectors edition on 360 was same price as the normal edition!

Pity the book was unreadable and nobody takes Septims!

    New interview here:

    http://www.gametrailers.com/gamepage.php?id=2403

It's dated two days ago (scroll down to "Interviews").

Talks about strongholds and the new UI options, and new camera modes including a WOW type "drive" mode and a tactical mode.

It might be too early to rub salt into an open wound, but it looks like even the vanilla version over here wil be DVD-ROM (which is kind of standrd now for UK games, very few come on multiple cd-roms now)

Figures. I really wish MS' Vista-based push for PC gaming as a platform would help standardize packaging with North American publishers.

I really, really do not understand why game publishers don't just go all-DVD. How many people can seriously still play video games on computers that don't have DVD ROM's? The only people who can possibly have PC's that don't will have been people that have built their own or continuously upgraded, and those people will know how to buy and upgrade to a DVD-ROM drive.

That's good, I know JR was always pissed off about aboyt lack of standard DVD-R game releases in USA. I mean DVD-Roms have been standard on PC's for what 7 years now?

At least we get it cheaper though for once :p I've found a £19.99 pre-order

Chalnoth, from what I understand it's not the publishers that are the problem, its the US retailers. They pressure the publishers to release CD-ROM versions so they don't have to deal with the (supposedly significant number of) people buying the DVD-ROM version then bringing it back not realizing it wouldn't work. After applying such pressure I wouldn't be surprised it they only buy the CD-ROM version assuming multiple versions will be released. So just like that it doesn't make much sense for the publisher to ship a DVD version at all in the US (see Serious Sam 2, Dreamfall etc).

To this day, some OEMs are selling low end boxes with CD-ROM drives only. This is just another bullet point on the long list of why more and more people are abandoning PC gaming

People aren't abandoning PC gaming at all, though. They're moving to MMORPG's.

I don't understand how that can be. DVD drives have been standard for >5 years now and even cheap lap-tops ship with DVD R/W's these days. Who are all those CD-ROM only owning consumers whose PC's can play the latest games but don't have DVD drives?

Thats a very good question that I don't have an answer to it. Supposedly this is what the retailers say though. I know I've personally had a DVD-ROM drive in my computer for the last 8 years

Anyway, it seems they've started selecting beta testers. Good luck guys.

The many people out there who have CD burners but dont have DVD drives.

Many people bought a CD burner over a DVD drive. Therefore the DVD drive never became the standard, at least not from what I've seen. More often than not you'll find people clinging on there bottom systems that have CD burners in them and figure they'll get a DVD burner on the next upgrade.

DVD-rom drives never became that popular, burners seem to always outshine read only drives, and the DVD had to go against the burner CD drive.

But even DVD burner drivers are dirt cheap these days. As are the media (at the very least the single-layer stuff is cheap now).

Yes, but people still put it off till the next build.

There are many systems out there waiting till they can no longer play games, make another big jump and then stay that way for a very long time.
