Actually..., it makes me wonder why developers don't try this method but well, I don't know better than them , so whatever reasons they have is their reasons and that's fine for me, in fact we can question all we want and we should, but would we get the answers we are after? Hope some developer brings some light on the subject....

Well without trying to speak with the voice of somebody who actually knows anything specific, my closest assumption is that QAA versus 2xMSAA or even 4xMSAA on the 360 is simply not worth the effort or would not bring any gain.

It would have to be done in software, and I don't believe it would be worth implementing it anyway. Quincunx was implemented in hardware for nVidia cards.

Quincunx is effectively 2xMSAA in terms of storage/ram requirements -> There is no memory advantage versus 2xMSAA because it is the same. This is explained in the stickied thread. ;)

Why are developers relying on a not as effective solution instead of the better one, when both eat the same resources?

    It puzzles me

Quincunx hides the jaggies about as well as 4xMSAA with a performance hit barely over 2xAA, at the cost of blurring the image slightly. So it depends on what the developer wants, smoother edges or a sharper image.

Becouse it blurs the image quite a bit. The loss in sharpness/detail is noticable especially with the non quincunx image as reference. On a good TV or monitor that has good/excellent image reproduction this is a obvious difference.

Having tested before games with Quincunx at 1280*720 I can say the difference is quite big.

Do ATI GPUs even support Quincunx?

Wide tent filter option for AA seems to be something similar. Certainly masks the jaggies with bluriness across the whole screen.

Can anyone take FarCry 2 screenshots to see at what resolution is running on consoles?

Fallout 3 is 1280x720 on PS3 and 360 with 4xAA on the 360. Both also have 8x AF.

Where did you get that 4xAA figure? I haven't seen any serious statements here that it's anything above 2x.

Does Resistance 1, or Killzone 2 screenshots look blurry to you? I'd say that this argument about Quincunx being very blurry is an exaggeration or myth, or perhaps is only a problem endemic to certain specific hardware configurations/videocards. Because with all the games on the PS3 that use the Quincunx method of AA, we frankly don't evidence of this "substantial blurring" that some people speak of.

In any case, with so many PS3 games nowadays opting for some form of full-screen BLUR FILTER to reduce aliasing in their games (e.g., GTA IV, Bioshock, and even MGS4 looks a little blurry to my eyes), I still consider Quincunx to be a far more attractive, sharper, cleaner alternative. There's no way you can convince me that Killzone 2 or Resistance 1 has the equivalent of the full-screen blurriness as GTA IV.

However if I have understood correctly the AA filter in unreal engine 3 is limited for some object but not more on 360; just confirm UE3 has not studied to support AA in any version, correct?

Well, GTA is sub-720p whereas KZ and RFoM aren't. It's not comparing like for like.
