Germany's Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits (Fraunhofer IIS) and France's Thomson SA have added two new elements to MP3 Surround demonstration software: MP3 SX (MP3 Stereo eXtended), which enhances MP3 stereo files for multichannel playback; and Ensonido, which provides portable MP3 Surround sound using stereo headphones, the companies announced Tuesday.

Demo software containing both enhancements can be downloaded for free.

Well after converting a few files to it I'm not impressed.
The center channal sounds all messed up sometimes.
I'll stick to using ffdshow to upmix all my files to 5.1.

Is that using the InterVideo filters to encode the audio offline, or is there a way to do it in realtime now?

I used to use the SRS CircleSurround II plugin for WMP - worked pretty well.
