Famitsu Poll On PS, Xbox Meetings August 05, 2005

by: Tim Thomas

Readers of Japanese magazine, Famitsu give their opinions on the recent spate of meetings based around Sony and Microsoft's next generation consoles.

Famitsu readers have expressed their opinions on how Sony and Microsoft fared with the recent meetings on the future of their next generation consoles.

A clear 42.3 per cent were more impressed with Microsoft's Xbox Japan Summit, while Sony's PlayStation Meeting received 31.5 per cent of the vote. 26.2 per cent remained undecided.

While it's fair to assume that Sony have less to give away at this time with the launch of their console still quite some time in the future, the poll also shows that the recent crop of game announcements made by Microsoft have made waves in Japan - a good sign for Microsoft with their recent efforts in the region.

We'll have more as it breaks.

Hey, I gotta give MS props, this is huge. They've done an extremely good job with promotion so far. Can't wait to pick up mine later on this year.

well to be fair, MS is quite a lot closer to a launch date so that would be expected IMO. (more games to show etc)

I seriously doubt this is any indication of a lack of enthusiasm for PS3 in Japan. :D

OH.... and I agree.... kudos to MS for doing better (so far) with Japan and meeting their needs.

Yeah it certianly seems like they will fair better this time around. Fanb0ys won't agree, but then again they never do...

Aren't those readers of Famitsu XBox though? ;)

The poll numbers aren't as exciting when you think about it that way.

bingo?

Since when has there been a "Famitsu" xbox website where people would vote?

Unless of course in japan people have magical magazines that lets you vote on polls without needing an internet connection?

Wow...its like getting negative percentage numbers about Democrats from a Republican website and vice versa.

Hey I don't know - aren't there frequently polls in magazines?

Whatever the case, this is the translated text from the quoted sites original source:

Famitsu Xbox inquiry to Sony & Microsoft fairs

05,08,05 - Japanese Famitsu Xbox has its readers in the current expenditure asked which, they found which meeting better in July and more impressed it:

42,3 % - Xbox Japan Summit 2005 (Microsoft)
31.5 % - PlayStation meeting 2005 (Sony)
26.2 % - none of no indication

Polls in magazines? you mean magazines that would been ready to go to print before the press conferences? nah polls are a website thing.

btw, where did you get this suposed translated text from?

Was the Playstation Meeting even open to the public? I thought it was more of a developer/marketer show than anything else.

Are you serious? There were polls in magazines all the time before websites. They were just conducted via phone or via mail-in cards. You do remember a pre-Internet world, don't you QRoach? ;)

Anyway here's the source of original translation: http://www.gamefront.de/

Well, it's not as if they could possibly do any worse... ;) The only way is up right now for MS in japan, and I think people are a bit more enthusiastic this time around, not at least in regards to the aesthetic aspect. Japanese homes are often SMALL. Also, I think the japanese have had more time to warm up to a non-japanese console maker, and good hardware specs and what seems like pretty darn nice software support from japanese devs (not just friggin DoA pornslut games this time...)

Of course, it's just to be expected MS to generate higher interest right now; they HAVE to roll out the big guns, drum up teh hype and excitement, etc. They're launching in another couple months after all.

Sony'll start up their PR machine and revv it up to full sooner or later too, and us euros will probably die of old age before we can actually buy the darn things too... :?

It might have been more interesting to know how many readers participated in the Famitsu Xbox poll.

At any rate this thread loses its luster when it is titled correctly:
Readers of Japanese Xbox magazine More Impressed w/ Microsoft's Xbox Summit than Sony's Playstation Meeting, 42.3% to 31.5%

-aldo

People should really look into thread worthy stories to make sure they got the story right AND got the information in the right context. If this was a general poll of all Famitsu readers then yeah, I would praise Microsoft for what they did with their conference (I don't doubt they did good either, with Lost Odyssey, Blue Dragon and other Japanese DEV games...it should be expected that they get praised for paying more attention to the japanese) but it seems these numbers are very misleading...

I dont see why all the rukkus is being made. Its Japan, anything positive Xbox gets is news. :p

This doesn't make sense. yes I know how magazines once did it. Those polls would usually span multiple issues what has it been? two - three and 1/2 weeks since the conferences?

1. For one thing we're taking the translation from gamefront as gospel? who is to say they got it wront, perhaps it wasn't Famitsu xbox and it was just famitsu.

2. What was the date of the microsft conference again? If this was a "magazine" mail poll (i'm sorry but I don't know of any video game magazines that conduct phone polls) has enough time passed between issues to "start" a poll and recieve all the reader feedback for the following issue?

3. What if this was a an in store poll and the just asked customers of some large chain stores?

Well, the thread starter decided to throw this out without sufficient translation. So you can't really go either way with this until theres a professional translation of this...but for the time being GameFronts translation states that the votes are from Xbox Famitsu readers....I still kinda find it peculiar that if thats the case...that Xbox360 only got 40%...but yeah...lets see this get tranlated correctly (if there is a mistake).

Well, it *is* the source material for the original article posted here, so even they got it wrong, the article posted got their story wrong as well - even if by chance they accidently reported it right; though I think a sensationlist haedline was their real goal.

Hey it's Japan - I don't know. ;) A likely scenario in my mind could be "Famitsu XBox readers! Text message your responses to the following number by this date!"

3. What if this was a an in store poll and the just asked customers of some large chain stores?

Could be.

I mean if we wanted the definitive answer, we would search Famitsu's website and see if there's any trace of this there. I tried already actually, but even in a translate-engine, navigation for me is hopeless. Maybe someone that speaks some basic Japanese?
