J. Peterman, I never knew!

However, John Peterman and his catalog are real—although the company is based in Lexington, Kentucky, not New York City. J. Peterman talks like the character in the show and, as portrayed on the show, the catalog (called the "Owner's Manual") is spiced with tangential prose in the descriptions of the products—hard-to-find clothing and accessories.

After a somewhat serendipitous series of events—a boom, a bust, a buy-out, a buy-back, and, finally, a meeting between John Peterman and O'Hurley (which the latter likened to "Bruno Magli meeting O.J. Simpson")— O'Hurley now sits on J. Peterman board of directors.

John Peterman wrote a book about the company's trials, Seinfeld influence, and more called J Peterman Rides Again, available at bookstores on the web.
Wow, that's one weird story!
Must be a marketeers dream, storytelling at it's best.
