In the world of gaming, no one can argue that both Sonic and Mario are well known characters. During the first year of the short-lived “Walk of Game”, they were inducted at the same time alongside Link and the Halo series. While Mario has sold over 222 million copies amongst it’s never-ending list of game titles, Sonic has sold only 70 million. While at first glance that may seem like a major difference in game sales, delving deeper into the history of Sonic and Mario will allow gamers to see just how impressive that number really is.

It really is frightening to think that after 15 years of mediocre Sonic games, the character still causes a frenzy upon every game release amongst children in every nation of the planet.

Just imagine what would happen if SEGA actually released a good Sonic game.

SEGA would print some serious money.

hahahah, bwahahaha

erm seriously texan erm op Sonic was at one point more popular than Mickey Mouse, but that was back in the later days of the Genesis, under the US Senate hearings Sega kept being a target of and just around the launch of the 32X and Saturn when Sega HQ all of a sudden decided to give Sonic a break instead of making a 2d sequel...well the 3d frenzied gaming media would have chewed it up and given it 3 out of 10 for being 2d back then...

I have something for you to think about though... its about the fact that at one point Sega could have decided to wait, way back in 1993 and just work on a console that would have been released in 1996 instead of 1994 (kinda like how Nintendo kept delaying)

Hitachi SH3s were fabbed in 1996 at 66Mhz or so and in 1995 Sega had that public promotion with Nvidia Nv1 (and secret mission for Nv2)...

Imagine if Sega would have waited, if they just supported the SegaCD/Genesis all the way to 96 and then release a Saturn with both a working cartridge and CDrom (most likely 4x or 6x drive) DUAL SH3s @ 66Mhz,at least 8MBs of ram split to system and video, and the mythical Nv2 (as well as a updated yamaha sound chip unless they left it up to Nv2 which Nv1 could do hardware sound)

Imagine, it would have been Sony in 94, 95 unopposed then facing a STRONGER Sega and a delayed N64 with no built in cdrom drive.

SEGAS would have ruuuuuled teh galaXy... just as long as they did not get friendly with Microsoft porting their games to PC and bowing down to DirectX crap which is how the dreamcast was really killed as they were used as guinnea pigs and mauled with a pentium and nvidia shader chip.

erm back on topic, Mario is more popular, then sonic but Pokemon characters have to be above them somewhere unless things have changed and as to how green helmet boy got in the childrens list, parents only have themselves to blame it seems.
