Interlacing pros

Is interlacing broadcasts only good for saving bandwidth or does it also give a smoother image? Will we see sports game being broadcast in 30fps progressive?

interlaced is a trade off, and a good one IMO.
ever seen the awful, jerky panning in some cinema movies scenes? take into account that movies are built around the framerate limitations, and you'll see progressive scan with a lowish (24, 25, 30fps) framerate is ill-suited for sports, news, war, etc.

some people say, somewhat rightly, that interlaced is a thing of the past that should be abolished.. but if so it should be replaced by 60fps progressive.

Can you describe a intelaced video/broadcast as 60 frame per second or does frame per second imply a hole frame per second?

It implies whole frames per second and so PAL is 25fps and NTSC, 30fps.

Aye. gives a real smooth image, watch a sports event on a SD crt ;)
The only upside I can see apart from saving bandwidth is that a proper deinterlacer can turn em back into whole frames again.
